I would like to add an E-Type to my collection, as I don’t presently have one. Which year would be the best for me to source?

I would suggest buying an early 1961-62 as they are the best to own for collectability. But a 1965-67 are the best to drive, and also collectable to own.

I’m buying my first show/ driver classic car from you soon. I wanted to know, what is the main winterization, or storage tips, I will need to know to keep my classic Jaguar in prime condition during winter/off season?

1. Fill the gas tank to decrease the amount of water that condenses in the tank. Add gas stabilizer, such as STA-BIL, to the tank as well. Once you have put the stabilizer in the gas, it is advisable to run your car for 3-5 minutes; this will ensure that the stabilizer is in your carburetors as well as your fuel lines.

2. Top off the other fluids, such as coolant, brake and transmission fluids to replenish the anti-corrosive properties they offer. Follow the same procedures as in #1 with running the vehicle for 3-5 minutes.

3. Disconnect or remove the battery and store in a cool, dry place, especially in cold, wintery places. Preserve the battery by connecting it to a battery tender, preventing self-discharge. Make sure you do not store your battery on the direct floor; always place a piece of wood underneath it.

4. Wash, and then wax the car to add a fresh layer of protection. Thoroughly vacuum the interior to remove any food crumbs and debris that might attract wayward rodents. Convertible tops should be stored with the roof up to prevent permanent wrinkles in the fabric.

5. Apply tire spray to tires and use interior detailer to interior surfaces to reduce drying and cracking. Consider mounting the vehicle on jack stands to preserve shocks and tires. Disengage the brake. If you are not able to do this, then slightly over inflate the tires and ensuring you rotate them every 6 weeks to 2 months, so as not to create a flat spot on your tires.

6. Store the car in a completely dry, and preferably, in an enclosed garage if you have one.

7. Cover the car with a breathable car cover to allow dry air to circulate and discourage mold.

8. Dampness and mold can invade your vintage car from the ground up through a damp garage floor. If you have a small shop fan, run it periodically to prevent moisture from condensing on the undercarriage.

9. Make sure to inspect the car frequently, ensuring it doesn’t have any major leaks, which can visually be seen on the floor. If you see any leaks, address them accordingly.

The best way to prepare and maintain your vintage car in winter is to take it to a facility which is in the business of storing cars. They can initiate a maintenance program which far surpasses what you might do at home. They are bonded and insured to cover any loss or damage to the vehicle.

Why are matching numbers so desirable? Wouldn’t you want items replaced after so many years with the most current, updated replacements?

They are the parts that came with the car from the manufacturer, which lends to the originality of the vehicle. Having matching numbers increase the cars worth. Some of today’s new parts are not as well produced as originally manufactured. Original parts that came with the car are the best.

I have an E-Type show car that I was thinking of showing in some JCNA shows in other states. I live in Denver, CO and I have shown my 1961 XKE OTS there, but now I want to take it to AZ and TX so I can make it a National Champion. What’s the best way to transport it?

First of all, you need to use a reputable transport. Here are three that we use on a regular basis. We recommend them for enclosed transport of show cars:

1. Reliable Transport www.reliablecarriers.com

2. Inter City Transport www.intercitylines.com

3. JP Logistics www.jplogistics.net

They are also listed on our website for your convenience. They are competitive in cost, carry full coverage insurance on your vehicle, and they are also honest, trustworthy and dependable.
Make sure you ask for an enclosed trailer, soft tow straps and a direct route so your car is not loaded and unloaded several times, as that can increase the chance of mishaps or damage.

What are your recommendations for Concours preparations? Do you offer this service at your facility?

Yes we do offer it, but to begin, we need to know which type of competition you would like to be prepared for, Driven or Champion. It also depends on the overall condition of the car. We will require detailed photos, which we would be more than happy to review for you and give you an estimate.

My wife loves the sleek look of the XKE Jaguar and I would like to purchase one for her for Christmas. However, I must admit, I don’t know very much about the car as I have always owned newer Jaguars. What year and Series would you recommend to be the best investment and fun to drive?

I would recommend the 1965 thru 1967 4.2 with covered lights, they have comfortable seats and fully synchronized transmissions, are the most appreciating, and sought after, of all the E-type series.

Are Redline tires the proper tire for Concours judging on an XKE? I have seen this tire on XKEs in Concours events that I have attended.

Within the last two years JCNA made a ruling that the Redline tire is not acceptable in Champion class for judging, however, if you have a set of Redlines on your car now, we recommend reversing the tire, and put the redline inside and the black wall outside. That would be acceptable in judging.

If I wanted to offer my 1962 XKE Roadster to your company for sale, what steps do I need to take?

Schedule an appointment to bring the vehicle in to us for an evaluation and appraisal. If you cannot come in for an appointment, then mail/email us detailed photos showing all aspects of the vehicle including the engine, interior, undercarriage and trunk. We also need a written description with VIN numbers, engine number if applicable, and any other information you can supply (reference and condition). Tell us where the vehicle is located and if it is easily accessible. We will go over some questions with you to help get as much information as possible. If you have a value in mind, let us know. If not, we will discuss the price after we review your photos and information.
