Jaguar XK 120 Alloy
2007 Accomplishments

Over ten years ago Classic Showcase had the privilege of restoring this 1949 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster. Years later since restoration it continues to uphold our reputation for perfection and attention to detail. It is shown below with its owner and is continuing to be shown across the country. Keep an eye out for this beauty as it will be shown at several upcoming car shows this year. Next feature show is Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival in South Carolina.

  • The car was in Newport Rhode Island on Memorial Day for the Newport Concours (see pictures) where it took the " Best Foreign Sportscar Award". Competition was a Maseratti, Ferrari 365, E-type, MG, Mercedes 300 and several others.
  • William K. Vanderbilt Concours in Newport Rhode Island (July 27-29,
2007) - The car was awarded Best In Class (Open Sports Cars Post War UK
1949-1955 Class) and also received theTrustees Award (one of the top six awards at the Concours). There are a couple of pictures of the car on their website.
  • Keeneland Concours in Lexington, KY (Aug 25) where Jaguar was the featured marque. The car was awarded Best In Class in the Featured Marque Class. Competition included another alloy 120, a steel 120, a 1930 Swallow, a 140, a 150, and a 1939 SS 2.5 Litre Saloon. The trophy was presented by Mr. Bob Tullius. Pictures of the car can be found at the Keenelandconcours website.

The E-types have been appreciating in value in 2007 and here is an article from the August issue of Classic & Sportscar Magazine.

Maintaining Your Classic for the Winter Season

Don't let the winter months cause unnecessary damage to your classic. If you plan to store your classic this winter, follow these simple precautions to keep your baby safe and happy.

1. Drain the petrol. If you do not, then add a few drops of additive so your gasoline in the tank will not break down or go bad and cause problems to the carburetors or fuel pump. Marvell Mystery Oil is an amazing product and you'll find it works wonders. To add oil to the gas, put a small amount into the cylinders.

2. Disconnect the battery. If it is very cold, remove the battery completely and place on a trickle charger.

3. Place your vehicle on jack stands. This will save your tires from getting a flat spot from sitting. If you don't have access to a stand then slightly over inflate the tires to compensate for the amount of time they won't be in use.

4. Make sure the car has plenty of anti-freeze.

5. Keep your classic in a dry environment; if possible a climate controlled one. Never store a car on the dirt. When wet it can cause rust. Always try to park your car on the pavement.

6. Finally, give her one last polish, put a car cover on, say your goodbye, and put her away until you are ready to take the scenic route again.

RM Auction Results - Aug 17-18, 2007

RM Auctions has continued its record-breaking sales run in 2007 with another highly successful auction in Monterey, California over the weekend.

The annual Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction held August 17 and 18 at The Portola Plaza Hotel and Monterey Conference Centre was a resounding success with nearly 200 cars passing over the auction block for a record-breaking $46 million in total sales. 92% of the consigned vehicles sold with 9 vehicles topping the $1 million mark.

“One of the interesting aspects of this year’s Monterey sale was the increase in international visitors compared to last year – a testament to the growing popularity of this hobby,” said Rob Myers of RM Auctions.

“This set the scene for a record sale with spirited bidding and strong prices across the board – all great indicators that the collector car market has a very healthy future.”

The top seller of the weekend was a storied Le Mans contender – a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Spyder California which attracted a top bid of $4.95 million.

Total Sales: $46,754,350.27

Christies Auction Results - Aug 18 2007

Christie’s featured 50 vehicles at its Exceptional Motor Cars auction at the Monterey Jet Center in Monterey, California The event at Monterey is the largest annual auction for Christie’s.

Due to its rarity, the most expensive car in the auction was an elegant 1928 Mercedes-Benz Type S Torpedo Roadster. This classic Mercedes, complete with Saoutchick coachwork from Paris, has stayed in one family since its production.

The next most-expensive motor car at auction, in terms of its selling price, was an ex-Scuderia Ferrari or “Team Ferrari” 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Spyder. With the number 443 painted across the hood, trunk and side doors, this racer was built for the Ferrari racing teams. It was sold for $1,280,000.00

“The much-anticipated sale of Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari Lusso exceeded our highest expectations, confirming the continuing allure of one of the most important pop icons of our time. Considered to be one of the most important celebrity-owned cars ever to come to auction, the 800-strong crowd greeted its arrival on the block with cheers and unbridled enthusiasm. Elsewhere in the sale, many cars exceeded their high sale estimates, and the 18-car Private European Collection was 100% sold. These successes are a direct result of Christie’s strategy of fewer and finer, tightly-focused sales of collector cars, sourcing business from around the world and presenting these to a database that stretches beyond the traditional car
market,” said Christopher Sanger, Head of Car Sales, Christie’s Americas.

Total Sales: $8,197,057

Gooding & Company Auction Results Aug 19, 2007

Total Sales: $61,334,750

First-ever two-night Gooding & Company Auction sold 21 cars for more than $1 Million each, with a premier line-up including the oldest running car in the world and one-of-a-kind Ferrari's.

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance - Aug 19, 2007

The 18th Fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Course hosted some of the world’s rarest vintage vehicles and thousands of spectators.  Competitiors from 30 states and 12 countries brought their prized automotive possessions to the California’s Monterey Peninsula for judging, which included 24 classes.  The featured marques for 2007 were Aston Martin – with four classes, including a special exhibition of historic Astons and three postwar classes – and the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg group.  (The James Bond Aston Martin DB5 and Duesenbergs once owned by Clark Cable and Gary Cooper were among the most well-known vehicles).  Additionally, the historic hot rod class celebrated the 75th anniversary of the iconic ’32 Ford (known as “The Duece”) and the “10-plus Club” focused on cars with engines displacing 10 liters or more.  Overall, nearly 200 classic vehicles, including the event’s oldest competitor – an 1897 Henriod- competed in the annual classic car showcase along the Monterey coastline.

The Concours competition, culminated when a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Special, owned by Harry Yeaggy from Cincinnati, Ohio, was named “Best of the Show.”

Palos Verdes Concours D'Elegance - September 16 2007

The Trump National Golf Club, on the bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, with sweeping views of the sparkling Pacific, the majestic coastline and picturesque Catalina Island, hosted  the 15th Annual Palos Verdes Concours d' Elegance Classic Car show on Sunday, September 16, the Concours D'Elegance; an exhibition of automotive excellence.

The legendary automotive designer Carroll Shelby was the honored Grand Marshal. Sharing grand marshal duties with Shelby was local Palos Verdes resident and famed race car driver Bill Krause. In their honor, this year's Marque was Shelby Cobra. Other classes of American Performance Cars included Shelby Mustangs, 1932 Fords and Ford Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, and two classes of Corvettes.
For those with a fondness for the traditional American and European Classics this invitation only Concours d'Elegance included classes for Aston Martin, Jaguar, Lotus, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Rolls Royce and Bentley. All of these fine automobiles were showcased on the seven-acre Founders Park, a new addition to the Trump facility.

At the clubhouse entrance there was a display of new automobiles, an upscale marketplace boutique with custom-made jewelry, artwork, fine linens, automotive and more. Fine dining was available in the Trump Clubhouse with a casual fare available on the field.

Why are some classic car marquees going up in value greater than others?
Robert Fletcher, San Francisco, CA

Tom Says

What a great question.  The classic cars have hot and cold spells and become popular from the media (editorials, printed articles, television car programs, car shows and car clubs.)  This publicity creates a stimulation in the market and thus the interest in certain cars gets the ball rolling.  If the vehicle is part of a limited production that was of a low numbers produced, then the value would be higher on that kind of vehicle than if it was a higher production run vehicle.

What does original matching numbers mean?
Delores Brown, Chicago, IL

Tom Says

This means that the car has the original engine that came with the car when it was manufactured from the factory.  Matching numbers means the engine, transmission, body and parts are all original to that vehicle from the manufacturer.

If the car is painted a different color than the original color, does this lower the value of the vehicle?
Chuck Tyler,  Atlanta, GA

Tom Says

No. If the car is painted a color that is more appealing to the general mass of people it should not lower the value. However, if you are showing the care in a concours and it is not painted a correct color, you will lose points. A correct color for a car is any color that was available the year the car was produced.
