Question 01: What kind of 5 speed can I install in my 1967 Jaguar XKE with little to no modifications?

Tom's Answer: Here are the ones that are commercially available for installation in a Jaguar E-type:
  • The Gearbox from E-type Fabs - The short tail version is used for SWB cars, while the long tail is available for V12's. The 6-cylinder kit uses the Model S gearbox as the base platform. The kit includes the gearbox, shifter, knob, mount, driveshaft flange, driveshaft and clutch disc. A new heavy-duty bellhousing is supplied.

  • Cosworth designed MT75, in a specially designed case, installs with only minor modification, comes with most installation parts, and utilizes your original bellhousing.

  • JT5 (formerly Medatronics) - The JT5 is the most widely used 5 speed conversion for vintage Jaguars.

  • T5 Tremec 5-Speed Conversion Gearbox. This is a direct replacement for the original Jaguar E-Type transmission.

  • Borg Warner T5 Worldclass. The BW T5WC is a high-performance version of the familiar BW T5

  • Getrag gearbox - There are 2 versions of the Getrag 5 speed. The STD version with OD 5th and the "sport" box with direct 5th and dog's leg 1st.

  • Tremec 3550. This is a very high-performance transmission meant to replace the BW T5 in racing applications. It is made in Mexico.

  • The Driven Man- Custom-built gearbox based on the Tremec Z Spec T5

Question 02:  What factors affect RPM’s on a 5 speed?

Tom's Answer: There are a lot of factors that go into calculating RPM’s and gear ratios.

It depends on the following:

  1. The temperature outside
  2. The air pressure
  3. The air pressure in your tires
  4. The size of the tires
  5. The amount of tread wear on the tires
  6. The weight inside your car
  7. The elevation that you are driving in
  8. The condition of the road
  9. And probably some other items as well

With that being said, if you have a 3.54 rear end gear ratio, with a .63 in 5th gear ratio at 3500 RPM’s it should put your car at 2205 RPM’s. With a .75 5th gear ratio at 3500 RPM’s should put your car at 2625 RPM’s. The engine will be revving higher, but if you want to reduce the RPM’s more, than the .63 gear would be the choice to go with. It depends on the factors listed above.

Question 03: Do you have the Lucas Wiring Code guide as I need to know what wire goes to what?

Tom's Answer: In the United Kingdom the British Standard BS-AU7 determines color coding of automobile wiring. Lucas uses a 7-color set in which plain colors - purple, green, blue, red, white, brown and green are supplemented by a further group using a base color with a thin line trace of a different color, thus:

Black Earth (ground) connections
Green feeds to aux. devices controlled by ignition switch (wipers, etc.)
White base color for ignition circuits
Red

sidelights (parking lights) and rear lights

Blue with white trace main beam headlamp with red trace - dip (meeting) beam headlamp
Purple

auxiliary devices not fed via the ignitor switch, e.g. horn,
interior light

Brown main battery feed

Question 04: I have a 1966 E-type that is missing one of the horns...How do I tell which one is missing?

Tom's Answer: The E-type had two horns located on the frame just behind the radiator, one a High note, the other a Low note. The horns will have a “H” or an “L” engraved in it, so you can determine which is which. Once you have determined which one is missing, then it can be purchased easily at one of many Jaguar suppliers.

Question 05: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...

Tom's Answer: We use "CPI" which is published by Black Book. It is an incredible, informative price guide and reference, and we highly recommend it!

Tracing the history of your car can provide information such as whether the car has been involved in any accidents, who the previous owners were, and whether the car was maintained properly. It can also alert you to potential safety issues, such as air bags that were deployed, that should be checked to ensure the issues were resolved properly. Several services are available that provide information about your vehicle's history.

Get the Vehicle Identification Number:

  • Services that can trace the history of your car will require its vehicle identification number. The VIN is a 17-digit code assigned to vehicles that works much like a Social Security number for people, providing a unique identity for each car. Information reported by insurance companies, state DMVs, garages and lenders will be linked to a car's VIN. To find the VIN for your car, check your registration papers, the certificate of title, the driver's side of the dashboard, or the door frame on the driver's side.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau:

  • The NICB is a free service that focuses its history searches on auto theft and salvage titles. It gets this information from insurance companies within its network of more than 1,100 partners. The partners in the network report information on a voluntary basis, which allows them to report on both theft and salvage, or provide information on only one. The result is that the information may be incomplete. Still, these reports can serve as a starting point for researching a vehicle's history. Reports can be ordered by visiting the NICB website and clicking the "VINCheck" box. After arriving on the VINCheck page and entering the VIN, the report will be displayed on the website.

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System:

  • The NMVTIS gets its information from insurance companies, salvage yards and automotive recycling operations. Unlike the voluntary reporting of the NICB members, the network that provides information to the NMVTIS is required to do so by federal law. Most state DMV websites offer links to the NMVTIS portal, where the process of purchasing a Vehicle History Report can be initiated. The NMVTIS site can also be accessed directly. The NMVTIS does not sell vehicle history reports, but offers them through its network of affiliated service providers, which are listed on the site. Once on the NMVTIS site, a service provider can be selected to assemble a VHR on a vehicle as specified by its VIN. After its completion, the history report will be available in a digital format on the affiliated provider's website.

Autocheck and Carfax:

  • AutoCheck and Carfax are private title search companies that get information from many of the same sources as the NICB and NMVTIS. However, they also aggregate data for their vehicle history reports from hundreds of sources around the country, including repair shops, police departments, automobile auctions, car rental companies, and fire departments. In addition to providing information on collisions, reports from these services track vehicle histories for manufacturer’s recalls, vehicle returns based on Lemon Laws, lien holder information, state inspections, and maintenance records.

Concours d’Elegance, Pebble Beach, CA

Car collectors worldwide dream of competing at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links is the stage and the rolling Pacific Ocean serves as backdrop.

Begun in 1950, this concours is the top-ranking collector car competition in the world. It is also the event to which most other modern concours now trace their roots. Initially modeled on the early European concours that showcased new cars, the Pebble Beach Concours shifted its focus to collector cars in 1955—and other concours followed suit. It has also taken the lead by including racing greats and offering featured marques and special classes as early as 1953, introducing displays of dream cars and concepts in the 1980s, and instituting driving events and emphasizing the importance of preservation in the 1990s.

Guided by—and often driving—the interests of enthusiasts the world over, this concours continues to set the bar for all others.

The concours d’elegance is not a contest of speed, but of elegance. Automobiles are judged for their style and technical merit, as well as their history, their originality and the accuracy of their preservation or restoration—and the best garner reward and recognition.

The 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will feature the following marques and special classes among others:

  • Motor Cars of the Raj
  • Rollston Coachwork
  • OSCA

In tandem with the competition between extraordinary historic automobiles, the Concours also serves as gracious host to some of the world’s most anticipated concept and new car debuts each year.

The Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) has initiated an International Meeting which encompasses a national competition in Concours d’Elegance- Champion and Driven divisions, Slalom, and Rally.  This year’s event will be held in beautiful Santa Barbara, California.  See JCNA website for details.

This year's IJF is being hosted by the Jaguar Owner's Club of Los Angeles (JOCLA) with substantial assistance from the San Diego Jaguar Club (SDJC).
