Top-seller: 1957 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Scaglietti Coupe achieves $1,815,000. RM Auctions kicked off its 2012 calendar on a positive note in Arizona, posting over $25.5 million* in sales with a strong 89 % sell-through at its annual Arizona Biltmore sale in Phoenix. Now in its 13th year, the well-established auction presented a magnificent roster of 140 blue-chip motor cars – spanning the spectrum of the collector car market – before a standing-room only crowd. Illustrating RM’s global clientele, bidders represented 21 countries around the world, with a strong showing of European enthusiasts.

Our Arizona sale proved to be a great kick start to what is shaping up as another terrific auction year. We are very pleased with the results of the sale and were delighted to welcome the world’s premiere collectors back to the Arizona Biltmore,” said Rob Myers, Chairman & Founder, RM Auctions. “The results speak for themselves, once again proving that great automobiles, rare, correct examples with documented provenance, consistently attract great prices at auction as collectors continue to seek out the best examples for their collections. We look forward to continuing the momentum at our upcoming Milhous Collection and Amelia Island sales.”

Headlining the top-sellers list at RM’s two-day Arizona auction was a superb roster of Ferraris, led by the unique ex-Dottore Wax / Greg Garrison 1957 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Scaglietti Coupe, s/n 0671 SA, the only example of the 34 410 Superamerica’s to have been bodied new by Scaglietti. QUESTION: What is the difference between a Series I, I ½, II, and III Jaguar? John Merriman Plano, TX

ANSWER:
Early Series I's were first introduced in 1961-1964, and were fitted with a 3.8 liter 6 cylinder engine, and Moss 4 speed non-synchronized transmission. The earliest cars had an aluminum dash and center instrument cluster. Late series I’s from 1965-1967 featured a 4.2 liter 6 cylinder engine with a fully synchronized transmission. Both cars had covered headlights, toggle switches, and early model features.
Series 1 ½’s were offered in late 1967 to early 1968. This was a transition model to the Series II. They had a 4.2 6 cylinder engine with a fully synchronized transmission, open headlights, two Stromberg carburetors, rocker switches on the dash and the body style is the same to a Series I. These still had the same parking and brake light fixtures. These cars debuted with a larger grille opening; heavier bumpers, larger radiators, and the handles inside the door were changed.

Series II was offered from 1969 to 1971 and featured a 4.2 engine with 2 Stromberg carburetors and synchronized transmission. The body changed a lot in this model, with bumpers, brake lights and parking light fixtures much larger than before. This Jaguar offered improved air conditioning, upgraded brakes, a redesigned interior including improved seating with reclining ability, and A/C and power steering were available as factory options.

Series III was manufactured from 1971 to 1974 and had a larger engine, with 5.3 liters, a 12 cylinder engine with fully synchronized transmission of unbridled power for your sports car enthusiasts. Another necessary change included power steering being a standard section of the car. During this period a small number of 4.2 liter "Series 3" Jaguars were made.

QUESTION: I was wondering, with the price of gasoline, if it is totally necessary to put in premium gasoline. The octane they stated in the book is actually higher than we have here in the states. Ben Banher Alpine, CA

ANSWER: It is not necessary, but you'll lose horsepower. You can go down to a lower octane fuel, but you will sacrifice power. If it starts to ping, then I recommend going back up to a higher octane.   The only other way is to readjust the timing of the engine, to retard the timing, but once again you will sacrifice power and performance.

QUESTION: How do I find out what the original color combination was for my matching numbers 1974 Jaguar? Stephen Burns Belmont, CA

ANSWER:
That is a great question. If you don’t have the original Jaguar Heritage Certificate you can apply for it yourself. Applying for the Heritage certificate will give you of all the original information regarding your car, such as all the numbers it was given at the time of production such as the VIN, Gearbox, Body and Engine number; the color combination, when it was built and where, and the first registered owner’s name.

We recommend you become a member of the JCNA (Jaguar Club of North America) as your membership includes a subscription to the Jaguar Journal, a complimentary subscription to Jaguar Magazine, access to the JCNA technical help line, and JCNA members are also eligible for discounts on new Jaguars, a reduced fee on the Heritage Certificate and Jaguar books, and a 5% discount on collector car insurance from Hagerty. What are “Car Apps”? An article by Google

The main attraction for car App’s is that they provide a cheaper alternative to the navigation systems available then, such as those sold by TomTom and Garmin.  By combining the internal GPS found in smartphones with relatively cheap downloadable apps, car owners now have a relatively inexpensive alternative to those offered with fixed navigation systems.

The popularity of these early car apps demonstrated to app producers the potential demand that existed for such applications. By making creative use of the functionalities designed into smartphones, developers could design innovative new apps with a focus on cars.  These apps could provide car owners with a wealth of information such as the performance of the vehicle or make the grueling daily commute somewhat less tiresome. Developers soon realized that smartphones were able to achieve even more than this however. Apps such as Cartipicate http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/carticipate/id285818837?mt=8  took advantage of the social aspect and tracking abilities of mobile technology. With this app, owners were able to efficiently car pool with other car owners in a way that was never possible before. It is interesting to see the way that car app technology is providing unique solutions to 21st century problems.

The fact that many apps were able to save people money only helped to fuel the boom. A popular app known as Gas Buddy http://gasbuddy.com/  alerts the owner of the vehicle of the relative cost of fuel at gas stations near their location.  This not only makes it much easier to find a gas station it also can save the owner a considerable sum of money when taken over a period of a year.

Summed up in its name, Green Fuel http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/greenfuel/id339942242?mt=8 indicates to car owners where they can find alternative gas stations selling more environmentally friendly fuels.  Repair Pal http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/repairpal-auto-repair-expert/id300996215?mt=8 , another popular car app, gives the owner of the vehicle an estimated price on of fixing a particular part on their vehicle.  Dynolicious http://dynolicious.com/ measures the relative performance of your vehicle to give you an indication if improvements are worthwhile or not.  Not only is this all useful information to know, it also provides car owners with the information they need on demand.

The surging popularity of car apps is also due to the fact that they supply the answer to many common problems which drivers are likely to encounter. Traffic alert http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/traffic+alert  helps people to avoid traffic jams, Trapster http://trapster.com/devices/iphone/ warns motorists of potential speed traps and Find My Car http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-car!/id349510601?mt=8 helps to locate parked vehicles.  Car apps are not only solving common car related dilemmas they are also allowing people to lead lives more in tune with their values.

Even though car apps have already become very popular with motorists there is still a great deal of room for a huge amount of growth in the future.  There are more motor vehicles in the United States than people, and smartphone technology is yet to reach the masses. The future for car apps is bright, very bright indeed.

Winter is without a doubt the hardest season of the year on your classic car. If you are like me, you try to take care of all the routine maintenance before the cold weather hits and hope it all holds together until Spring arrives.

Well, spring is almost here and there are a number of things the shade tree mechanic will want to be doing the very instant the snows clear away, maintenance on the prized car. It needs it very badly by now. For the last three to four months your car hasn't had an oil change, or chassis lubrication or a number of other things that badly need doing.

  • Tires—tend to your tires. By rotating them seasonally, you extend the life of the set. As the weather gets warmer and temperatures increase, tire pressure changes. Under-inflated tires reduce a vehicle's fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent, according to www.fueleconomy.gov. Tires should be checked monthly to make sure that they are inflated to manufacturers' recommendations, which can typically be found on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box. Be sure to avoid over-inflating the tires, as this can lead to premature or irregular tire wear.
  • Blades—wiper blades take a severe beating. Early spring is a good time to check and replace them.

  • Underbody— clean your vehicle's underbody. There's no magic cleaning solution that will get rid of the corrosive salt build-up for those who live in heavy winter urban areas. Make sure you bring the car to the car wash shop and get the entire body, along with undercarriage, systematically washed and the sand and salt fully removed.
  • Fluids—check all automotive fluids and top off as necessary. Winter driving conditions require your engine to work harder and deplete fluid levels faster. Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on an engine if it is not cared for properly, as cold startups are among the most severe conditions that engines undergo. Drivers need to protect their vehicles with a quality motor oil to endure the varying temperatures as most of the country changes from cooler to warmer temperatures. The changing of seasons serves as an excellent reminder of the importance of using high quality motor oils in your engine.

  • Brakes—examine your brakes. Like wipers, brakes take on a bigger role during wintertime and should be checked to ensure they've survived.

  • Air filters tend to become heavy due to pollen affecting the overall output of the vehicle. You should immediately replace the air filters if you found them to be inappropriate in order to enhance the performance of your car. You should remove dirt, debris and leaves from the cowl screen and other crevices. Leaves that are present in the cowl screen can break producing residue that can block the evaporator drain. Dry wiping your car with the paper towel or similar paper item will scrape the clear coat. Make sure to utilize mild lather and water to clean the affected region. Spring time can be a good time to take proper care of your vehicle. If you reside in the snow region of our nation the primary thing to do is to make it sure that sand and salt is away from your car.

  • The next thing you must do is to have a good coat of wax to be applied to assist in protecting your car from the strong UV sunrays. Your car must be vacuumed to eliminate sand and salt that might have entered. You should also check the hood.

  • Confirm all the fluids involving the coolant mechanism and the AC before those humid and hot days arrive. Running the AC system once in a while will certainly keep it operational when you require it.

  • If pot holes are a problem in your region you must have the suspension examined to make it sure there are no damaged components from getting jumped. Worn suspension components can easily lead to tire and other parts hastily wearing and alignment hassles. A vehicle having bad alignment can ultimately lead to poor driving, handling and hamper your cars fuel mileage.

Pebble Beach Tour D'Elegance

The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex is an annual driving event that delights entrants and spectators alike.

Initiated to showcase the elegance of the automobile in motion, the Tour also underscores the early history of the place that is Pebble Beach. Decades before golf links were laid out along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, this area was known for its scenic drive, winding for miles through pine and cypress forest, dancing alongside dramatic cliffs and leading, ultimately, to a beautiful crescent-shaped bay.
