• QUESTION: What does Blue chip investment mean?
• ANSWER: The term "Blue Chip" at one time referred to the highest value chip at a casino as it was colored blue. Since the 1920’s, "blue chip" has been a stock market term for the most stable and consistent stocks. In the car collector world, it means a good investment grade collectible car. Blue chip products are known to weather downturns and be profitable in the face of adverse economic conditions, which helps to contribute to their long record of stable and reliable growth.
• QUESTION: I have a 1968 OTS with the open headlights. I am replacing the bonnet and can convert to closed headlights. Am I ruining the car?
• ANSWER: If your car has all the other early features of a covered headlight XKE (other than the covered headlights) then it is acceptable to do a headlight conversion. This should be disclosed if it is ever questioned in Jaguar judging, or ownership transfers. But, if the car does not have all the early features, such as rocker switches and two carburetors, then we would not recommend the conversion to covered headlights be done.
• QUESTION: I have been following the rise of the Jaguar XKE’s for the last few years. I do not know much about them. How do you recommend I get started?
• ANSWER: We recommend you get a few books to explain the differences in the many series and do some research into what you are thinking you would like to get. Then look online at the reputable forums related to Jaguars, as there are very many forums dedicated to the passionate Jaguar lover. They can provide you with a plethora of history, interesting facts, and helpful hints to keep your Jaguar running and driving well. You can find answers to your questions, and even some schematics and helpful advice when you get stuck on an issue. We highly suggest that you join your local Jaguar club through the JCNA and attend local events, shows and concours’. The people are great, and building friendships based on a common love for the Jaguar hobby is very rewarding and informative.
• QUESTION: Why are some classic car marques going up in value greater than others?
• ANSWER: What a great question. The classic cars have hot and cool spells and become popular from the media (editorials, printed articles, television car programs, car shows and car clubs.) This publicity creates a stimulation in the market and thus the interest in certain cars gets the ball rolling. If the vehicle is part of a limited production that was of a low numbers produced, then the value would be higher on that kind of vehicle than if it was a higher production run vehicle.
• QUESTION: When is a car considered “classic”?
• ANSWER: A classic car is an "older" car - the exact definition of which varies around the world. The Classic Car Club of America maintains that a car must be between 30 and 49 years old to be a classic, while cars between 50 and 99 years old fall into a "pre-antique" class...Cars that are 100 years and older fall into the "Antique Class". In the UK, 'classic cars' can range from veteran to vintage, to post-vintage. Post–Second World War classic cars are not so precisely defined.
• QUESTION: I just had my XKE upgraded with all the performance options and I want to take it out and see what she can do. If I wanted to learn how to drive my performance XKE on a race track, how would I begin to get educated on this?
• ANSWER: We find people are getting more enjoyment out of their performance cars and want to safely enjoy them at higher speeds.
Once you have had all the proper performance upgrades installed on your car, and it has been road tested and broken in, then you would want to look into your areas local tracks. Please have your car checked for safety by someone who is very well qualified before taken on the track. You should be in a good state of mind and physically able to drive on a rave track as well.
You always want to utilize areas set aside for higher speed driving where you can enjoy opening your car up and taking it to its higher limits while being safe.
Go to the JCNA website, as they have a great program to get you started called the HPDE:
The High Performance Drivers Education is a new program launched within JCNA to address the needs of our members who want to drive their cars at higher speed in a safe and controlled environment. It is not racing but the race track environment and its safety features make it a very safe way to improve one's driving skills.
A number of regional coordinators will work in each region to develop such a program. It will include JCNA organized events as well as events organized by other groups. Participating in selected events will increase opportunities to drive on track with little extra work.
• QUESTION: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...
• ANSWER: We use "CPI" which is published by Black Book. It is an incredible, informative price guide and reference, and we highly recommend it!

Basic Garage Safety: Steps For Protecting Your Classic Car Before Disaster Strikes

Although hurricanes and floods can bring different hazards, some of the basic precautions are the same. For starters, it’s a good idea to make sure your garage is in good shape. Are the roof and siding sound, are the windows fully glazed and well caulked, and are the gutters and roof free of debris?
While you’re checking, be sure to trim shrubbery or branches and tree limbs that overhang the garage or could brush against the building in a high wind. Not only will your garage and home be safer, it will look better. Also make sure that any outside doors have deadbolts, which protect against intruders and keep high winds or flying objects from knocking doors open. As an extra precaution, make sure your house number can be easily seen from the street to ensure that emergency help can find you quickly.
If your garage is like most, in addition to your collector car, you probably have a lawnmower, tools, cleaning supplies and all kinds of lawn implements. All of these things can cause damage if they get loose due to high winds or a flood. But it’s relatively easy to reduce the risk:
- Store rakes, shovels and other hanging tools in cabinets and secure them with hooks. If cabinets aren’t feasible, secure tools to their wall hooks with small bungee cords or rubber straps.
- Cover your car when it’s being stored to help protect it from flying debris.
- If you store your car elevated, be sure to support it on sturdy jack stands under the suspension, which should always be under tension. Never use concrete or cinder blocks.
- For long-term storage, always disconnect the battery. Also, if you know a storm is coming, be sure to pick up from the ground any battery tenders and extension cords to keep them out of floodwaters.
- Secure heavy objects, such as drills or toolboxes and appliances, with safety straps.
- Install safety latches (like childproof ones) in cabinet doors and drawers to prevent them from opening and spilling their contents.
- Fasten ceiling lights and other hanging equipment to supports by using safety cables.
- For framed pictures, car signs and neon signs, use long-shanked, open-eye hooks and picture wire to fasten them to walls. Make sure the hooks are anchored into the walls with studs. You can also try closed-eye hooks and securely screw them into the back of the frame.
- Install flexible gas lines and automatic gas shutoff valves (if your garage is heated).
- Keep a multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher in your garage.
Even if disaster never strikes, following these tips may contribute to a garage that has less clutter and an environment in which your classic car is generally safer.

| Winter is without a doubt the hardest season of the year on your classic car. If you are like me, you try to take care of all the routine maintenance before the cold weather hits and hope it all holds together until Spring arrives. Well, spring is almost here and there are a number of things the shade tree mechanic will want to be doing the very instant the snows clear away, maintenance on the prized car. It needs it very badly by now. For the last three to four months your car hasn't had an oil change, or chassis lubrication or a number of other things that badly need doing.
Tires—tend to your tires. By rotating them seasonally, you extend the life of the set. As the weather gets warmer and temperatures increase, tire pressure changes. Under-inflated tires reduce a vehicle's fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent, according to www.fueleconomy.gov. Tires should be checked monthly to make sure that they are inflated to manufacturers' recommendations, which can typically be found on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box. Be sure to avoid over-inflating the tires, as this can lead to premature or irregular tire wear.
Blades—wiper blades take a severe beating. Early spring is a good time to check and replace them.
Underbody— clean your vehicle's underbody. There's no magic cleaning solution that will get rid of the corrosive salt build-up for those who live in heavy winter urban areas. Make sure you bring the car to the car wash shop and get the entire body, along with undercarriage, systematically washed and the sand and salt fully removed.
Fluids—check all automotive fluids and top off as necessary. Winter driving conditions require your engine to work harder and deplete fluid levels faster. Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on an engine if it is not cared for properly, as cold startups are among the most severe conditions that engines undergo. Drivers need to protect their vehicles with a quality motor oil to endure the varying temperatures as most of the country changes from cooler to warmer temperatures. The changing of seasons serves as an excellent reminder of the importance of using high quality motor oils in your engine.
Brakes—examine your brakes. Like wipers, brakes take on a bigger role during wintertime and should be checked to ensure they've survived.
Air filters tend to become heavy due to pollen affecting the overall output of the vehicle. You should immediately replace the air filters if you found them to be inappropriate in order to enhance the performance of your car. You should remove dirt, debris and leaves from the cowl screen and other crevices. Leaves that are present in the cowl screen can break producing residue that can block the evaporator drain. Dry wiping your car with the paper towel or similar paper item will scrape the clear coat. Make sure to utilize mild lather and water to clean the affected region. Spring time can be a good time to take proper care of your vehicle. If you reside in the snow region of our nation the primary thing to do is to make sure that sand and salt is away from your car.
The next thing you must do is to have a good coat of wax to be applied to assist in protecting your car from the strong UV sunrays. Your car must be vacuumed to eliminate sand and salt that might have entered.
Confirm all the fluids involving the coolant mechanism and the AC before those humid and hot days arrive. Running the AC system once in a while will certainly keep it operational when you require it.
If pot holes are a problem in your region you must have the suspension examined to make sure there are no damaged components from getting jumped. Worn suspension components can easily lead to tire and other parts hastily wearing and alignment hassles. A vehicle having bad alignment can ultimately lead to poor driving, handling and hamper your cars fuel mileage. |

San Diego Jaguar Club 49th Annual Concours D’Elegance Spanish Landing Park
The San Diego Jaguar Club will celebrate Jaguar Automobiles old and new at its annual Concours d’Elegance car show Sunday, July 19th. The event will be held harbor-side at beautiful Spanish Landing Park, San Diego (across from Lindbergh Field) from 10 AM until 3 PM. Over sixty Jaguars will be on display from all around the United States.
This show is sanctioned by Jaguar Clubs of North America and annually draws entrants from all over the US. Any Jaguar owner is welcome to enter his/her Jaguar for judging or display.

The Colorado Grand 1000 Tour through the Rockies • Colorado, USA
