Question 01: What are your recommendations for Concours preparations?

Tom's Answer: Yes we do offer Concours Preparations, but need to know which type of competition you'd like to be prepared for - i.e. Driven or Champion. To give you an estimate, we will require detailed photos to determine the conidtion, and will also need to know the judging rules for the event the car will be competing in. We are able to do everything you need in order to prepare your car for concours season.

Question 02: I would like to know your opinion on performance upgrades for a restored Jaguar XKE. I am planning to use it on the highway, and at some club events.

Tom's Answer: We recommend performance upgrades to E-types and XKs that people would like to drive and use on a frequent basis. The performance upgrades include 5 speed transmission, aluminum radiator with cooling fans, brake system improvements such as larger caliper disks; improved power booster, suspension improvements, adjustable shocks, adjustable torsion bar, engine modifications and upgrades. Comfort improvements: interior modifications to include sound deadening, smaller steering wheel for better handling, modifying or changing the seats, air conditioning, and an improved sound system with additional speakers added.

These items can be picked and chosen individually. They will enhance the performance and comfort of your Jaguar while on the highway. The performance upgrades can be performed very easily at the time of the restoration. More and more collectors today are looking to enjoy driving their restored Jaguar. These performance improvements were not offered when these vehicles were manufactured but are available today and worth considering.

Question 03: What is the difference between a Series I, I ½, II, and III Jaguar?

Tom's Answer: Early Series I's were first introduced in 1961-1964, and were fitted with a 3.8 liter 6-cylinder engine, and Moss 4 speed non-synchronized transmission. The earliest cars had an aluminum dash and center instrument cluster. Late series I’s from 1965-1967 featured a 4.2 liter 6-cylinder engine with a fully synchronized transmission. Both cars had covered headlights, toggle switches, and early model features.

Series 1 ½’s were offered in late 1967 to early 1968. This was a transition model to the Series II. They had a 4.2L 6-cylinder engine with a fully synchronized transmission, open headlights, two Stromberg carburetors, rocker switches on the dash, and the body style is the same to a Series I. These still had the same parking and brake light fixtures. These cars debuted with a larger grille opening; heavier bumpers, larger radiators, and the handles inside the door were changed.

Series II was offered from 1969 to 1971 and featured a 4.2L engine with 2 Stromberg carburetors and synchronized transmission. The body changed a lot in this model, with bumpers, brake lights and parking light fixtures much larger than before. This Jaguar offered improved air conditioning, upgraded brakes, a redesigned interior including improved seating with reclining ability, and A/C and power steering were available as factory options.

Series III was manufactured from 1971 to 1974 and had a larger engine, with 5.3 liters, a 12-cylinder engine with fully synchronized transmission of unbridled power for your sports car enthusiasts. Another necessary change included power steering being a standard section of the car. During this period a small number of 4.2 liter "Series 3" Jaguars were made.

Available in 3 body styles:

o Roadster / Open Two Seater (OTS)
o Fixed Head Coupe (FHC)
o Fixed Head Coupe 2+2 (FHC 2+2)

  • All Series 1.5’s had uncovered headlights. These were the same design as applied to late Series 1 models (just prior to series 1.5). The Series 1.5 had a screw at the base of the front that holds down the trim. Series 2 headlights are slightly larger at 160 mm (vs 143 mm on the late Series 1 & 1.5 cars). The headlights on the Series 2 were also mounted further forward in the front hood, with a larger chrome bezel above/behind the lamp. See the close-up image for a comparison.
  • As all Series 1.5 vehicles had badging on the rear trunk lid reading "E-Type Jaguar 4.2".
  • Indicators / parker lights were positioned above the bumpers front and back. US-spec cars had all-white front lenses, and all-red rear lenses. Most other markets (including any European-spec cars) had white/amber front lenses and red/amber rear lenses.
  • 15 X 5 inch steel 72 spoke wire wheels. Series 1.5 cars had wingless hexagonal central knock-offs (changed due to safety regulations in the US). This style continued on later series cars. The new knock-off had 3 lobes around the nut, with "Jaguar" cast in the center, and the direction of tightening indicated.
  • Fitted with Dunlop 185 - 15 SP41 or 185 VR 15 Pirelli Cinturato radial ply tires.
  • Twin exhaust pipes exited the car centrally under the number plate. Original exhaust size was 1.75 inches (many have modified to a 2 inch system).
  • OTS cars in Series 1.5 form had two roof bows (as opposed to the three bows in the Series 1).
  • Small front grille/mouth (the same as Series 1). The design is smaller than later models, with a single chrome strip through the middle and small central Jaguar badge.

Question 04: I really love Classic Jaguars and am interested in becoming a judge for local Jaguar Concourse’s. How do I go about becoming one?

Tom's Answer: As a minimum qualification, Judges must be either JCNA club members or JCNA Members-at-Large, and all persons assigned to judge at a JCNA Concours need to have been exposed to JCNA Concours rules and judging procedures. Ideally, they will have participated as an Entrant and recently undergone some level of Judge training such as stated below:

   A. Undergo thorough training on the contents of the Rule Book and the content, use and marking of score sheets.

   B. Take the current JCNA Judge's Test. The purpose of the test is best served by taking
   it as a group, explaining each answer, and responding to all questions (see NOTE following D below).

   C. Perform practice judging of one or more components under the supervision of the
   Chief Judge, and

   D. Serve as an Apprentice Judge with a judging team during a JCNA sanctioned

Concours and mark practice score sheets for examination and critique by the team leader at the conclusion of their judging.

* As a further step to improve the standardization and quality of JCNA Concours
Judging, beginning in 2013, Driven Division will still require only one Certified
Judge per Judging Team, but Champion and Special Divisions will require two Certified Judges per Judging Team. (2012 AGM)

*Acknowledgement of Certification

   A. After having successfully accomplished the foregoing, the Chief Judge will notify the club Membership Chairperson to    identify the person as a "Judge" when next submitting the club's membership roster to JCNA. (This normally occurs at the    beginning of each calendar year.)

   B. Thereafter, the letter "J" (for judge) followed by the certification expiration year-date should appear on the front of the    person's JCNA Membership Card.

   C. If a newly certified judge intends to judge at other than his home club in the current year, the Chief Judge may, if desired,    make a one-time endorsement on the back of the person's JCNA Membership Card: "Certified as a Concours Judge for the    calendar year 20xx", followed by the date and the Chief Judge's name.

*Once certified, Judges are expected to Judge at a minimum of 2 JCNA sanctioned Concours every three years.

Question 05: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...

Tom's Answer: We use CPI which is published by Black Book. It is an incredible resource that is updated 6 times a years. In addition, Black Book has a great accompanying smartphone app, so you can get instant updates where you are.
 

Great Car Apps for Road Trips

If you have been looking forward to taking a scenic road trip now that all the rain has made everything bloom, you should check out a few of these apps for your phone so you can get the most out of your trip. They will help navigate through scenic spots, avoid areas with accidents, locate great places to stay, and even let you know where to get gas.

RoadTrippers (Android, iOS: Free)
Roadtrippers (Android, iOS) is another useful resource for road trip planning, helping users find everything from diners and dives to hotels, restaurants, national parks, roadside attractions and other scenic points of interest. Users can plan out trips in the app or its web portal, saving locations and stops into a trip plan which you can sync across multiple devices for easy reference.

Glympse (Android, iOS: Free)
If you're traveling as part of a convoy or just want to tell your hosts that you're on the way, consider Glympse (Android, iOS), a free location sharing app. The app requires no sign-ins, instead taking advantage of your existing mobile number or email. You send out a "Glympse," which shares your current location and/or your ETA to a location either through the app or a Web link. The Glympse also self-destructs, as it's valid only for a particular window of time. It's a great tool for checking in locations, coordinating a meet-up or sending out an ETA without putting yourself under the yoke of a more intrusive location sharing system.

Waze (Android, iOS: Free)
Waze (Android, iOS) is a crowd-sourced traffic map and navigation app. Users can check out traffic conditions based on real-time information from other Waze users, complete with reports on road hazards, accidents, speed traps and more. You can also actively report any incidents you encounter. Best of all, Waze includes guided turn-by-turn navigation that take traffic conditions into account.

GasBuddy (Android, iOS: Free) or Plugshare (Android, iOS: Free)
Long road trips mean you're going to need to fill up multiple times, so finding inexpensive gasoline and reliable filling stations is a must. Motorists in the USA and Canada stand to save some serious change with GasBuddy (Android, iOS), a mobile app that helps users track down the cheapest nearby gas station based on their present location. As many of the prices are based on user reports, GasBuddy rewards users with points for reporting and updating a station's prices. Those points make you eligible for regular raffles of prizes, like free gas. Brave early adopters of electric vehicles can instead give Plugshare (Android, iOS) a try: it lets you look up and review nearby charging stations for your electric car.

TollSmart (Android, iOS: $2.99 monthly)
Road tolls can add an unexpected chunk to your travel costs. TollSmart (Android, iOS) is a neat trip-planning app that allows you to quickly look up the price of all toll bridges, roadways, and tunnels from start to destination. The app allows you to create profiles for a variety of vehicles from the family sedan all the way up to nine-axle vehicles to calculate vehicle-based toll rates. The app also includes support for a variety of transponder-based systems like E-ZPass. Users can automatically log in toll rates in the app's TollTracker system for easy expense report logging. An in-app purchase provides you the ability to compare tolls across multiple proposed routes.

iExit (Android, iOS: Free)
Need to grab a bite to eat, withdraw some cash from an ATM, or catch some winks before the next leg of your road trip? iExit Interstate Exit Guide (Android, iOS) helps you plan your next pitstop, displaying handy pictographs of businesses and amenities in upcoming interstate exits. Users can search for specific businesses, display locations on an on-screen map, view gas prices, or find amenities like Wi-Fi, truck parking or campgrounds.

Spotify (Android, iOS: Free) or Audible (Android, iOS: Free)
Road trips are an excuse to listen to some great road music. Spotify (Android, iOS) can relieve the tedium of the drive and set the mood with on-demand music, curated streams and playlists and a rich library of artists and bands to listen to. You'll want the $9.99-a-month premium subscription, which removes ads, and most importantly, allows you to download music for offline listening so you can skip mobile data charges. If audiobooks are more your thing, there's also Amazon's Audible audiobook service (Android, iOS) to consider.

Automatic (Android, iOS: $99.95 per device)
You don't need to have a smart car or visit your local mechanic to make sense of the blinking Check Engine light. If you plug Automatic's $99.95 wireless peripheral into your car's OBD or on-board diagnostic port (usually under the steering wheel), the dongle wirelessly pairs with the Automatic app (Android, iOS) to provide a wealth of diagnostic information. You'll also get a slew of features normally associated only with newer smart cars. For instance, Automatic can analyze driving habits, issue speed limit warnings, track your fuel levels and even automatically call for emergency assistance, in the event of a crash.

Dash (Android, iOS: Free)
Where Automatic requires a proprietary OBD port adapter, Dash (Android, iOS) is designed to work with generic OBD port wireless devices that cost anywhere from $10 to $99. And Dash provides many of the same features. The app allows users to decode the Check Engine light as well as examine engine fault codes. You can also log trip details such as distance traveled, fuel used and miles per gallon. Dash also offers up driving analytics.

Urgent.ly (Android, iOS: Free)
Urgent.ly (Android, iOS) allows users to get on-demand roadside assistance, like an Uber for tow trucks and car repairs. Working on a totally on-demand basis, the app requires no subscription and has no hidden fees, just providing an up-front rate due when the service is done. Need a jump-start? Towing service? Gas delivery? Urgent.ly has got you covered. The app uses your GPS to locate you, and after you indicate what kind of assistance you need, the app puts you in touch with nearby providers.

AAA Mobile (Android, iOS: Free)
The AAA's mobile app (Android, iOS) functions as both a trip planner and an emergency road assistance tool for AAA members. The app allows users to look up thousands of AAA accredited hotels, motels, restaurants, and attractions, as well as find nearby car service stations, look up gas prices and request roadside assistance.

HotelTonight (Android, iOS: Free)
Ideally, you've got your accommodations and itinerary planned out on long road trips, but even the best laid plans can go wrong. If you suddenly need to look for last minute hotel rooms, HotelTonight (Android, iOS) is going to be a lifesaver, offering users last-minute discounts on vacancies and same night accommodations from top-rated hotels. Users can search by category and quality such as Basic, Hip or Luxe, view information on nearby hotels, and quickly book accommodations from within the app.

OpenTable (Android, iOS: Free)
You could try your luck looking for tables when eating out of town, or you could just as easily plan things out with OpenTable (Android, iOS). With OpenTable, you'll never have to worry about seating when planning your next night out, even making out of town reservations for your road trip. The app allows you to book reservations with more than 20,000 restaurants across the US, Canada and Mexico. Simply choose a date, time and number of diners, and you can pull up a list of available tables in real time, as well as set your reservations. You can view restaurants on a map, narrow your search by cuisine, price, and neighborhood and browse through menus and reviews.

Rally du Soleil, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Greenwich Concours d'Elegance

2017 will be the 22nd Greenwich Concours! Recognized as one of the premier concours in the country, Greenwich is unique in that it is two concours back to back. Saturday is the Concours Americana for American cars and motorcycles, while Sunday is the Concours International for imported marques.

Saturday features a circle of supercars, both American and foreign. There will also will be the first ever Hot Rod Class and a sure-to-please display of children’s cars. Saturday’s ticket also allows you to preview all of the cars in the Bonhams auction tent. Be sure to join us Saturday night for the gala party at the Greenwich Delamar Hotel, with a sumptuous buffet and luxurious yachts. On Sunday, we welcome the American Bugatti Club, with Bugatti being our featured marque. Sunday will also feature racecars from the Lime Rock Historic Festival. The Bonhams auction begins at noon and requires a separate admission – or you can watch through the open side of the tent.

On both days there will be displays of new cars including BMW, Lincoln, Cadillac, Tesla, Jaguar, Land Rover and Miller Motorcars – with Ferrari, Bugatti, Pagani, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, McLaren, Bentley and Maserati. There are even opportunities to test drive some of these amazing new vehicles. We will also have incredible yachts displayed at the Delamar Hotel docks.
