More than 200 collector cars and motorcycles were on display at the St. Regis Resort and Spa at Monarch Beach. The event's proceeds benefited three Marine Corps charities. They kicked off the Concours with an evening reception that was very successful. There were even a fly over show with Stearman biplanes and a PT-16.

Best of Show (Automobile) - 1933 Packard Series 1005 Convertible Coupe owned by Aaron Weiss
Best of Show (Motorcycle) - 1969 Munch Mammoth owned by Mitch Talcove
Barry Meguiar, the "Ultimate Car Guy," was honored at Sunday's Concours as the 2013 Automotive Icon.

Here is a partial list of award winners:

• On Sunday’s Concours Hal Sweeney won the Design Achievement Award for his 1966 Jaguar XKE FHC dressed in Jaguar Dark Blue with a tan interior. The judges were very impressed with the driving improvements, upgrades, and how they were incorporated while keeping with the original theme of what Jaguar created. This is a special award that is selected by all the judges, and was the only one handed out for all entries.

• Ken & Anne Smith were awarded 1st place with their 1936 Delahaye 135 competition with disappearing top convertible in the European Classics CCA 1925-1948 class.

• Colin Seid was awarded 2nd place with his beautifully restored 1954 Jaguar XK-120 FHC in the Jaguars XK-120, 140, 150 class.

• Steve Kirby was awarded 2nd place for 1965 Jaguar Mark 10 4.2 in the Post War Luxury Car Class (American and European)

• Tom Krefetz’s 1967 Jaguar XKE OTS was awarded 1st in Class for Jaguar XKEs.

This is a remarkable event, held in a picturesque setting. You will want to mark your calendar for next year’s event, as it is surely one to remember.

The oldest and grandest car show in North Orange County hosts Hot Rods and a Concours d’Elegance, with the true classics of the automotive industry spread out over eight acres of lawns.

While enjoying the cars, we feasted on fabulous food from Fullerton’s very own Burger Parlor and special brews from Bootlegger’s Brewery. There were performances in the outdoor amphitheater by The Pleasure Tones on Saturday and Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys on Sunday. Proceeds benefited the Muck’s youth arts education programs.

Attracting car enthusiasts, collectors, and restorers from all over the world, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance (formally known as the La Jolla Motor Car Classic) has become a prestigious international automotive event. The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance gives guests the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most remarkable automobiles in the world. This year the Concours paid tribute to a special theme, Honoring of the Classics, which showcase some of the world’s finest classics in automotive history.

Heather Kowalski & J. Craig Venter Tom Krefetz Ken Smith
Accepting their award for S-4B British Sports Cars Over 2.5L, for their 1967 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III BJ8
Accepting his award for S-4B British Sports Cars Over 2.5L, for his 1956 Jaguar XK140 Open Two Seater
Accepting his award for S-7 Rolls Royce/Bentley, for his 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Sedanca De Ville

This Concours featured the formal Classics and included such well-known marques as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Bugatti, Cadillac and Duesenberg. And there were entries from more arcane brands, including Isotta Fraschini, Delahaye and Minerva.

There were about 140 cars on view, of which 60 were true pre-war Classics. About half of those are from San Diego, Dorvillier said.

“Our show for the first seven years was a high-end car show in a Concours venue,” Dorvillier said. “All I’ve done is make it a Concours d’Elegance in a Concours venue.”

Last year’s Concours had a dozen true Classics, he said. This year there were some incredible cars from regional museums, including the Petersen in Los Angeles, Blackhawk in Danville, Mullin in Oxnard and our own San Diego Automotive Museum.

Classic Showcase welcomes these new employees to the team!
Heather Payne
I was  born and raised in beautiful sunny Southern California, and am currently living in Oceanside. I attended Guajome Park Academy for high school and currently attend Mira Costa College working towards a communications degree. In my spare time I enjoy going to the beach with friends, spending as much time hiking with my dog as possible, and playing soccer for various leagues.
Joseph Thaanum
It’s my father’s fault I’m afflicted with a passion for fine machinery…his master machinist’s eye saw a mechanical aptitude in his young son and fostered it by giving me all manner of things to take apart…planting a seed “Why do things work? Could it be made better?” Fast forward to present. Having a lifelong immersion in wrenching, machining, welding, fabrication, design engineering, on cars, motorcycles and more, over time acquiring decades of tacit knowledge and honed skill sets. I now get to apply all of that to the myriad superlative vintage and modern vehicles at Classic Showcase. “It’s like working on rolling works of art”
Gustavo Portillo
I was born in Guatemala, and started working in auto upholstery at the age of 12. Over the years, I have fallen in love with my craft, and have collected many different upholstery tools to help improve my work. When not working, I enjoy fishing and spending time with family.

Julio Grimaldo-Ramirez
My passion for cars began at an early age, building, modifying and painting model cars. With time, I began to expand and develop my skills working on friends and family cars. This experience piqued my interest in automotive restoration, and while attending college to receive a degree in mechanical engineering, I began doing body work for a living. After a few experiences led nowhere, I was given the opportunity to work for Classic Showcase where I hope to continue to expand and develop my skills.

On June 22nd, 2013 Classic Showcase hosted the Annual San Diego Jaguar Club judges training session at their facility which was well attended. The judges learned about the new Jaguar judging rules and procedures that had been voted in at the recent AGM in March in Dallas, TX. Every year, after the AGM, each club then educates their judges to the new information. All judges must be certified in order to judge at any sanctioned JCNA Concours, and these trainings are part of the certification. San Diego Jaguar Club Chief Judge Paul Novak introduced the rules changes, procedures and guidelines to all the judges in attendance. JCNA Chief Judge for the Rules Committee, Dick Cavicke, was present at the training. They presented a very informative presentation and we thank them for their service!

The Concours d ’Elegance was held at the La Torretta Lake Resort and Spa, a very affluent area of Houston, TX. The concours was an event to remember with beautiful cars of all makes and models, gracing the resort’s rolling green belts. It was well attended with gorgeous cars that were some of the best around. The Best in Show for a Pre-War car went to the 1936 Delahaye 135 F &F Teardrop Coupe and the Best in Show for Post War went to the 1969 Ford GT40 MKI while The People’s Choice award went to the 1937 Ford Darrin Convertible.

To start the exciting weekend, WorldWide Auctioneers held their annual Houston Classic auction on Saturday keeping the attendees busy all weekend long. The auction was quite successful with 90% of the cars consigned sold.

The Club Jaguar Mexico's JCNA sanctioned Concours was held the weekend of April 11-15, 2013 in Las Caballerizas, Dos Rios, Huixquilucan, Mexico. There were more than 25,000 fans, with 500 collector cars in immaculate condition with many cars belonging to the Jaguar Club members themselves. It is the largest Concours on the continent. Twenty one car makers also joined in the festivities including Alfa-Romeo, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Jeep, Lincoln, Maserati, Mastretta, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, RAM, Renault and Suzuki plus seven national new car launches were unveiled.

The event honored the Porsche 911’s 50th Anniversary where Jorge Terrones, President of Porsche Club Mexico, thanked the clubs, customers, and friends who made this celebration possible. There was a long line of Porsche 911’s waiting their turn to get on the main stage and to show off to the audience. The parade featured 35 vintage cars from different generations.

Barry McGuire of Car Crazy, http://www.carcrazycentral.com, was present with his staff, filming and preparing a show on the event. Check your listings as this is a “Must See” event. Pass this along to your car collector friends who might have missed out on making it this year, and remind them to mark the calendar for next year as this is definitely one to add to your bucket list.

The winner of Best of the Competition & The Best European Car, out of the 26 finalists, was the black 1961 Jaguar E-Type belonging to Enrique Vila. The "Best of Show" was for a 1956 Mercedes- Benz 300 SL “Gullwing". The President’s Award went to a 1958 Aston Martin DBII.

This year's Challenge Championship was certainly one of the best in years for several reasons, mainly because of the delightful people, the Keynote speakers, and all the exceptional Jaguar’s that were present.

• IAN CALLUM
• ANDY GOSS
• DAVE KINNEY
One of the absolute highlights was the Keynote Address given by, none less than, the legendary and consummate stylist, Ian Callum, the Chief Designer of Jaguar Cars.
Andy Goss, President of Jaguar Land Rover NA provided keen insights into the growing success of Jaguar in the USA.
Dave Kinney of Hagerty Insurance gave an outstanding presentation on the state of car collecting and evaluations.

Like the 2012 AGM, the 2013 Challenge Championship was held at the beautiful Wyndham Virginia Crossings Hotel and Resort. The location was ideal for the elegant presentation of nearly 100 of the best Jaguars in North America.

QUESTION: What is a PPI?

• ANSWER:
A PPI is a Pre Purchase Inspection. This inspection is recommended to someone who is unable to view the car in person before they decide to purchase it. Experts agree that used cars must be inspected prior to the final negotiation for purchase.  This inspection is done by a third party who inspects the vehicle and performs a written report. This report gives them all the details and condition of the car at that time.

QUESTION: I would like to know your opinion on performance upgrades for a Jaguar XKE that I am having restored. I am planning to use it on the highway and maybe show it in some club events…I’m not concerned with it being Concours correct...

• ANSWER:
We recommend performance upgrades to enhance the driving and handling ability, as well as the comfort of the driver and passenger, for E-types and XK’s that people would like to drive and use on a frequent bases. The performance upgrades include: 5 speed transmission, high-torque starter, lightened fly-wheel, aluminum radiator with auxiliary cooling fans, Weber carburetors, hydraulic system improvements, larger caliper disks, improved power booster, suspension improvements, adjustable shocks, adjustable torsion bar, engine modifications and upgrades, Classicfabs headers and stainless exhaust systems, electronic ignition, smaller steering wheel, adjustable seats, custom radio console, air-conditioning, power steering and sound deadening.

These items can be chosen individually. They will enhance the performance and comfort of your Jaguar while on the highway. The performance upgrades can be performed very easily at the time of the restoration. More and more, collectors today are looking to enjoy driving their restored Jaguars. These performance improvements were not offered when these vehicles were manufactured but are available today and worth considering.

QUESTION:
I just had my 1959 Jaguar restored and would love to meet other Jag fans to discuss their experiences…Do you know of any clubs or forums I could join?

• ANSWER: JCNA is the Jaguar Clubs of North America Association that encompasses all clubs of North America where Jag owners, enthusiasts, and collectors from across the country share their enthusiasm for this wonderful marque that is Jaguar! The JCNA website offers information about the various clubs in a region near you, and also lists related events such as Concours, rallies, races and other events. There are continuous updates in the recent news section and forums where Jag owners discuss certain issues such as restoration, service, advice, and overall friendly conversations about their shared passion for cars. The JCNA website can be accessed by clicking this link: http://www.jcna.com/

QUESTION: I am a brand new Jag owner, having just purchased a 1971 Series II 6 cylinder E-type. I've contacted my local club, and am interested in learning more about this beautiful car, and how to deal with minor service and maintenance. Are there any good manuals or guides out there?

• ANSWER: Many classic lovers take good care of their literature throughout their Jaguar ownership. Many “one owner” Jags have everything kept with the car that came with it originally such as owners and service manuals, maintenance receipts, etc. If you aren’t as fortunate to purchase from a classic Jag lover, you might need to find this literature on your own. The good news is, most manuals can be found on the wonderful tool we love; the internet. Many sources such as eBay and Amazon sell these manuals through private owners who can give you more information about the item you’re purchasing. Make sure your manual is in English…often times the re-prints can be just as good as the original manuals. Different look, same great information. With advances in technology there are even ways to save your manuals electronically, and you can purchase PDF versions of your manual that you can take with you wherever you go. Everything you need is only a click away!

QUESTION: I have a 1959 MGA with new Dunlop whitewall tires, but I am having a hard time keeping the whitewall white; There seems to be a brown color bleeding in. Does bleaching them white really work? What is your suggestion?

• ANSWER: When all else fails, SOS pads work. Do you think the color is coming from underneath the whitewall itself? If so, I would contact the maker/distributor of the tires and try to figure out the problem because this should not be happening. Your local auto-care facility should also supply a cleaner specific to that... I would not use Armor-all on tires by the way.

QUESTION: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...

• ANSWER:
We use "CPI" which is published by Black Book. It is an incredible, informative, and accurate price guide and reference, and we highly recommend it! It is updated quarterly to keep up with market changes. You can access the CPI website by clicking the following link: www.blackbookusa.com

Lost Classics: Tracking down our old cars...
We’ve all sold a classic and regretted it in later life, but how best to go about finding our lost cars?
By Greg Macleman (www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk)

We’ve all sold a classic and regretted it in later life, but how best to go about finding our lost cars? My search began this week.

Some of my earliest memories revolve around classic cars, in particular a 1972 MG BGT – GOX 867L – that belonged to my father. He bought it in the late ‘80s as a Teal blue basket case with rusty sills and little hope of being saved, and over the course of three years had it restored to near-concours condition, changing the colour to red along the way. I can remember with clarity the feeling of the wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel, and the tactile cold sensation of the metal studs that held it together. Equally, the musty smell of the interior has stuck with me, as has the mechanical click of the door release. It’s safe to say I owe a lot to that car – it sparked my interest in classic cars at the tender age of three.

Sad then, that in March 1993 my old man was forced to sell up to a gentleman from Coventry. The Royal Air Force had posted him to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, and the BGT would have been too difficult to take with him. Neither of us forgot the car though, and I have recently decided to try and track it down, to perhaps get first refusal from the current owner – if it even still existed.

And it proved easier than I thought. A quick check of the DVLA website showed that it is indeed still on the road, and has recently been taxed for a further twelve months. But here my search has stalled. Clubs have been contacted, tweets tweeted and the internet trawled, all to no avail. Its looking like I will have to settle for stumbling across it at a classic car show. If you see GOX 867L, please do get in touch.

Have you successfully tracked down a long lost classic? Please share your story to boost the morale of those of us still searching!

You've got your suntan lotion, a giant cooler and three cheesy novels loaded in the Kindle -- you're ready for a summer road trip. You may be prepared, but are you up to date on your summer auto maintenance? Sure, auto maintenance is the last thing on your mind, but it'll jump to the front pretty quickly if you're on the side of the road. Spend an afternoon on some simple auto maintenance procedures and you'll thank yourself in the end.

For your stored classic car:

First, look under the car on the ground to check for any fluids that may have leaked. Check and change fluids as needed. Then, check gasoline; if old, drain and replace. Check radiator anti-freeze level and note the color of the fluid. It should be a bright green. If not, it may need flushing and changing. Next, check and charge or replace the battery as needed. We recommend that you trickle charge or install a battery tender for your battery when not in use, even if it is a small amount of time such as the week days.  Check air pressure on all tires, don't forget the spare. Inspect the full vehicle to make sure that bolts and all hardware and suspension points are tight. Check engine performance for possible need of a tune up, carburetor and timing adjustment. If there are any noises or low oil pressure when you start the car, be sure to consult your mechanic before driving it.

For your daily driver:

Radiator Flush: The coolant in your radiator doesn't last forever. Over time it can break down and start to corrode the inside of your radiator. This can lead to cooling problems and radiator repair. A radiator flush once a year is cheap insurance against radiator repairs.

Check and replace Your Air Filter, if needed: You should replace your air filter twice a year, so now's a good time to get that 5-minute job out of the way.

Tire Checks: Summer traveling could mean driving in the rain. The tread on your tires must be adequate for rainy weather or you could end up in a ditch, or worse. Checking the tread depth on your tires takes one minute. While you're at it, you should check your tire pressure, too.

Replace Your Windshield Wipers: Winter weather can be brutal to your daily driver windshield wipers, making them almost useless if you get caught in a summer rain shower. Replace them at the beginning of the summer, if needed, and you won't have to worry.

Inspect Your Brakes: It's a good idea to inspect your brakes twice a year just to be sure everything is up to snuff. Car safety should always be a top priority. Go ahead and check your brake fluid while you're at it.

Check Your Battery: Corrosion is very likely to build up during winter weather driving. Check your battery posts and cables to ensure you'll have no starting problems.

Check Your Headlights: Sometimes you don't notice that you have a bulb out. Now's a good time to take a look to see if you need to replace a headlight bulb. Not only is it unsafe to drive with one headlight, you can get a ticket!
Take the time to pack some backup items if you are going to be driving to your summer vacation spot:

  • One gallon of 50% coolant to 50% water. 2 spare quarts of oil. One gallon of windshield washer fluid A good flashlight with spare batteries A disposable camera in case of accident, or a really good photo opportunity A piece of carpet, or a door mat, in case you have to kneel down on the ground in bad weather Drinking water. People always get thirsty.
  • Sunblock and insect repellant.

These are just a few items that can make your life a little better when out on the road this summer. And remember when driving long distances, take breaks ever couple of hours and stretch. Enjoy your summer!

Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation • Lake Tahoe Concours D'Elegance
Lake Tahoe, CA

In 1972 a group of Tahoe Yacht Club members and friends got together to share their passion for wooden boats. From this modest beginning, the Lake Tahoe Concours d' Elegance has grown to play a significant role in the wooden boat community, as well as the Lake Tahoe maritime community. Since its induction in 1994 the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation has hosted the Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance focusing on the continuing growth of the show, the quality of boat exhibits, the highest of judging standards and practices, and most importantly sharing the passion of wooden boats between exhibitors and public.

Each year the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation raises money for charitable donation which is exclusively focused in providing educational opportunities originating in the Lake Tahoe area that enhance expertise or understanding of maritime skills. Along with last years donations totaling $31,000 the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation has been able to make grant donations totaling more than $200,000 since 1994.

With our dedication to improvement and growth the 2013 Lake Tahoe Concours d' Elegance and Wooden Boat Week, scheduled for August 9 - 10, 2013, will be the best show to date.

Each year this event grows in popularity. In 2011, the event moved back to August which brought in the largest crowd in the event's 39 year history. We hope you will come and enjoy Lake Tahoe's great historical treasures. We truly appreciate all who participate in events and contribute to what has become one of the most highly acclaimed celebrations of wooden boats in the United States.

Pebble Beach Tour D'Elegance
Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex is an annual driving event that delights entrants and spectators alike.

Initiated to showcase the elegance of the automobile in motion, the Tour also underscores the early history of the place that is Pebble Beach. Decades before golf links were laid out along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, this area was known for its scenic drive, winding for miles through pine and cypress forest, dancing alongside dramatic cliffs and leading, ultimately, to a beautiful crescent-shaped bay.

The traditional Tour traces portions of the original 17-Mile Drive, traverses nearby mountains and valleys, and pauses for a time in charming Carmel-by-the-Sea. Tour participants enjoy a catered gourmet lunch, a champagne celebration at the finish and commemorative gifts.

The Tour is open to all entrants in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. And spectators are invited to view the Tour at key points along the route, particularly along Ocean Avenue in Carmel.

It is important to note that the Tour and the Concours are directly linked. If two vehicles tie in class competition at the Concours, the vehicle that has successfully completed the Tour gets the nod.

August 16, 2013, will mark the fifth annual Legends Of The Autobahn concours d’elegance and show—a celebration of German automotive engineering. An intimate event by Monterey standards, Legends has been labeled “the best-kept secret on the peninsula” by several automotive publications. However, while club affiliation is recommended for viewers, guests are welcome. Legends Of The Autobahn includes “club corral” parking for the four marques, and separate judging areas for each club. Participants may register either for the club corrals or concours judging. There may also be a separate parking area available for non-participants. Each club may have a display of special cars, or a special theme for a select group of cars. Viewers may encounter rare models, from historic Audi rally cars to the BMW Zagato Roadster that debuted here in 2012. You’ll find everything from factory-prepared specials to beautiful cars lovingly buffed by their enthusiast owners. A special luncheon and event shirts will be available for purchase. Participants are encouraged to place orders for both in advance. Whether you plan to park your car in a club corral or submit it for concours judging, please register early, as space is limited. The auctions are open to the general public and dealers are also welcome. Each event features over 500 Classic & Exotic cars. The events are held in February & November each year. The venue is The Spa Resort Casino in downtown Palm Springs, just steps away from many resorts, shopping and fine dining.

In 1985, Keith hosted his very first exotic car auction. A modest affair, by today's standards, but one that would start a tradition.
