Question 01: How many different shades of British Racing Green are there?

Tom's Answer: The color known as "British Racing Green" has changed on at least two occasions. The "original" British Racing Green - as used at Jaguar (on a C-type for example) was very dark, much like the old Bentley shade of green. It was used until the mid-70’s, when Jaguar dropped BRG all together and switched to Jaguar "Racing Green" - which is lighter. Other British cars also have a BRG but one is a blue green, and the other is a dark green. They are all correct, and really just a matter of preference. To identify, open the driver's door and look at the forward jamb; there's an I.D. label there with paint and trim codes.

Question 02: What types of fluids does Classic Showcase use on their classic E-Types, and what could you recommend for mine?

Tom's Answer: We typically use Castrol 20-50 Antifreeze- 50/50 green anti-freeze, and DOT 3 brake fluid in our XKEs.

Question 03:
What paint do you use on your heater box?

Tom's Answer: A good quality black gloss for the heater box. There should be no dents or rust, and make sure it is straight prior to prepping for paint. Also make sure to sand and primer it prior to painting it gloss black.

Question 04: Do I need tubes for my E-Type's new wire wheels?

Tom's Answer: If your car had tubes before, you will need to install tubes again - unless you have a tubeless wheel that does not require this...However, sometimes those can leak, so we recommend installing new tubes in all wire wheels.

Question 05: What kind of finishes can I put on my E-type exhaust manifolds?

Tom's Answer: They can be restored in their original porcelain, with a special treatment to reduce the heat, which should stop the cracking. You can jet coat them, it is not concours correct, but it will look good and it will not flake or break, and will stay nice. Most of the problems with modern porcelain stem from the fact that the finish is not applied properly, this is in large part due to restrictions placed by the EPA. Even good porcelain, and any other finish, will react if exhaust temperatures get too high through a miss, running lean or retarded timing. If the engine and the cooling system is not set up properly the car can overheat and cause the manifolds to crack.

Question 06: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...

Tom's Answer:
We use "CPI" which is published by Black Book. It is an incredible, informative price guide and reference, and we highly recommend it!
