It was a bright, warm, and sunny day when Classic Showcase hosted its 3rd Jaguar Jamboree Smokin’ BBQ and Car Show. The event was created to include many activities to please not only Jaguar lovers, but for people of all ages and backgrounds! The team at Classic Showcase enjoys putting the Jamboree on to give back to the Jaguar community, and is gratified to inform people on the many different ways they can care for their Jaguars.

All of the local Southern California Jaguar clubs were invited to attend, and included members from The San Diego Jaguar Club, the Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles, the Inland Empire Jaguar Club, the Mexico City Jaguar Club, along with the friends and family of Classic Showcase.

One of the activities started we offered was a Jaguar specific car show. The show was open to Jaguars of any year or model - but in order to participate, they needed to be driven to the Jamboree.

The first Jamboree entrants began showing up around 9:30 am, checked in with staff and then guided to the Show Field, which provided ample room to admire the gorgeous lines, and to have great photo opportunities by those in attendance. There were nearly 50 Jaguars on the show field at the event, and the judging for the awards was done by the Jaguar owners; non-show participant Jaguars lined both sides of the street in front of Classic Showcase. It was a rather warm day in Southern California, but there were ample areas available to get some shade along with plenty of ice cold refreshments to cool guests down. While in the several shaded areas for relaxing, guests were able to take in all the bountiful beauty of both old and new model Jaguars alike..

The car show had Jaguar models as early as the 1950s, all the way up to the newer 2017 models. Our friends at Hoehn Jaguar Land Rover brought 3 new 2017 models along for all to see, with a very knowledgeable representative standing by to answer any questions Jamboree guests had.

There was an overwhelming response for the tours, as people were very interested in the daily operations of Classic Showcase. The “Ask A Tech” session after lunch had great questions, and was very informative to all. Our Master Technician, David Barber handled the presentation and fielded all the questions from the participants.

The Smokin’ BBQ was prepared by Oceanside's own Hunter Steakhouse, who filled the air with marvelous smells of BBQ tri-tip and chicken. They laid out a plentiful buffet for all to partake in, with the menu including tasty meats, a crisp green Caesar salad, creamy potato salad, fresh fruit, and soft chocolate chip cookies to round out the filling meal.

The Jamey Holbrook Jazz Band provided fabulous music throughout lunch and the car show, and featured an eclectic mix of standards and jazzy sylings that provided a great backdrop to the Jamboree.. Everyone enjoyed taking in all the delightful sights, sounds, and smells, and had great fellowship throughout the Jamboree.

Our guest speaker, Kevin Easton from Easton Robertson Insurance Brokers (who is a Local Hagerty Agent), spoke about “Properly insuring your vehicle in an appreciating market”, and fielded any questions as well. The Coventry Foundation (a non-profit organization with the goal of better serving the Jaguar® Heritage, and preserving the marque for future generations) session was full of questions and answers, which were handled by Tom Krefetz.

All registrants were given a goody bag full of gifts from the various Jamboree supporters listed below:

• Hagerty
• Hoehn Jaguar
• Welsh Jaguar
• SNG Barrett
• XK’s Unlimited

• Classic & Sports Car Magazine
• Griots Garage
• O’Reilly’s Auto Parts
• OSJI
• Muncie Imports

The Muckenthaler Motor Car Festival is an event dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Southern California's automotive history. The judging staff of the Muckenthaler Motor Car Festival seeks to recognize those vehicles that demonstrate the best originality and authenticity while valuing design, styling and elegance. The Concours is held on the 8 acre rolling grounds of the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA.

The Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles held their Jaguar specific concours within the Motor Car Festival concours. The Jaguars are judged by trained, and certified, JCNA judges, with all Jags being judged to JCNA standards.

This year was just as bright and warm as in previous years, and it was another great day for a concours. The Jaguar Club is very lucky to be able to have the location that has the most tree coverage so there is a little reprieve from the blaring sun. The members strolled from car to car, taking in all the beautiful artistry of the gems laid before them. This is truly a magnificent thing to gaze upon. So many Jaguars that have been cared for, loved, and shown with pride. Jaguar owners came out from Los Angeles, San Diego, and even as far as Mexico.

Three of our clients, Marco De La Barrera, David Reed, and Craig Wright, brought their restored Jaguars to be shown, along with one of our own restorations, owned by Classic Showcase’s President, Tom Krefetz. All three gentleman won awards for their beautiful cars, a 1951 Jaguar XK-120 OTS, a 1959 Jaguar XK-150S OTS, and a 1965 Jaguar XKE FHC. Classic Showcase was proud to have restored Marcos XK-120 and David’s XK-150S, and to have helped dial in Craig’s Coupe. Tom’s car, a 1966 Jaguar XKE FHC, also took home a win, with 1st place in its class!

This was the 1st sanctioned JCNA show of the Southern California show season, and everyone was out in full force with hopes of earning the coveted perfect 100-point score (a perfect 10 for the driven category). The Muckenthaler grounds were full of stunningly well kept, and restored, cars from all eras and all geographic regions. There were American and foreign cars dating all the way back to the early 1900’s.

Charlie Hallums was both the Concours Chairman, and the Chief Judge for the JOCLA concours. He was very successful in pulling off another great car show!

There were about forty Jaguars in the Concours, with members from Los Angeles, San Diego, The Inland Empire, and the Mexico City club. Members from all three of the Southern CA clubs were part of the judging teams, making for a smooth and efficient judging session.

Overall, it was a gorgeous and relaxing day for all in attendance. This is a wonderful event to attend if you are able to make it to the Southern California region, and is always sure to please. Mark your calendars for next year in mid-May, and we hope to see you there!

The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance celebrated their 13th anniversary during the weekend of April 7-9th in the elegant coastal town of La Jolla. Located in the Ellen Browning Scripps Park at the La Jolla Cove, it is perhaps one of the most scenic car shows you’ll ever attend, with waves crashing, palm trees blowing in the breeze, and sea lions & seals swimming next to snorkelers and tourists nearby. La Jolla is one of the most prestigious (and wealthiest) cities in not only California, but the US, so it’s not surprising that the cars found here are truly special.

This year the Porsche Club of San Diego had a ton of great cars on display, as well as a handful of Jaguars, Ferraris, Super performance Shelbys, and other eye candy. The concours did not disappoint.

Once you enter the concours, you are overcome by the extreme high  level of the cars that surround you,  all priceless pieces of artwork, from the timeless lines of the Jaguar E-Type, to Concours-level restorations of Bentleys, Packards, Alfa Romeos, Delahayes, as well as other historic makes dating all of the way back to the 1920s.

The featured marque this year was Packard, who had made some of the most luxurious automobiles in America, well into the late 1950s. The Packards on display that weekend were some of the most incredible we have ever seen!

The variety was the best part of the show. There were vintage race cars, luxury town cars, and so much more, but they all had one thing in common – a Concours winning attention to detail. Being “Concours” level means it undergoes the strictest judging of any car show possible. The judges will go over every inch of the car to make sure the turn signals work, everything is clean, it is period correct/original, etc. in order to make sure the car is absolutely perfect. The judging happens on Sunday, the day of the concours, until about 2 pm, where the judges then pick three winners in each class, as well as the “Best in Show.”

The event concluded with a fantastic display of automobiles set along the picturesque cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. The show saw over 10,000 attendees over the course of the day. A total of 125 cars competed in 17 classes. The Best of Show award was presented to Ron and Sandy Hansen for their 1921 Duesenberg dual cowl phaeton.

We recommend, that if you can attend, you put it on your calendar as it is one show to not be missed. The 2018 is set for April 6-8. Hope to see you there!

Marco recieving his First Place Award. This was an exhaustive 2-year restoration that the team at Classic Showcase were proud to be a part of!

It's not often that you come across a 1961 Jaguar XKE that is an OBL Roadster, let alone one that's been taken apart 30 years ago in San Diego and stored in a dry garage. Classic Showcase purchased this first-year production run E-Type with the intent of restoring it to that of a Show level, and make the car a 1st place Champion. Like most, this restoration has had some unique issues that needed to be taken care of in order to achieve the perfection required from a show car; the 1961 OBL cars have many unique parts and features that are exclusive to these series of cars; there were a few missing parts that needed to be sourced in order to make it complete, but in the end, our team was able to pull it together and create a magnificent example. The car was inspected and completely disassembled, then stripped to bare metal, metal finished, and rotisserie-restored. The E-Type was finished in Opalescent Jaguar Dark Blue with a red interior color combination – all made by our master trimmer in thier correct and proper materials, fitted with a blue cloth top and sack bag. In addition, all the mechanical systems on the roadster have been gone through and brought up to that of a Concours standard. This nut and bolt restoration is sure to please the most discerning of Jaguar collectors, and is sure to make a splash at upcoming Concours events!

This numbers-matching Jaguar XK-150 DHC has been undergoing a comprehensive Show-Driver restoration. It is scheduled for a magnificent color combination of a Silver exterior, fitted with a handsome Red interior. *Please note that if you would like to purchase this car we can change it to the exterior color of your choice for a limited time until we paint the car - please inquire for more information. The DHC is beautiful looking with the top up, or the top down - whichever way you want, you'll be sure to recieve many compliments and attention as you enjoy driving this timeless classic Jaguar. This 3.8 liter example is from a limited production run of 1960-1961 - the only years in which Jaguar produced this displacement variety; of note is the fact that Jaguar ended the production of XKs after this series, and began production of the coveted E-Type series of cars. This particular example features a 4 speed transmission with overdrive, disc brakes in the front and rear, twin SU carbs, full instrumentation, a traditional Jaguar steering wheel, wire wheels, and dual exaust - just to mention a few of the many features.

Being a Show-Driver restoration, this example comes with all of the attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that you would come to expect from a Classic Showcase restoration. The car is presently scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017. We’ll revisit the car’s progress in the Fall issue of our Newsletter.

Question 01: Does my spare wheel have to match the 4 other ones when I am showing it in a JCNA concours??

Tom's Answer: Yes, if the wheels are painted, they all need to be painted, and if chrome, then all need to be chrome. The tire has to match, as well,  and they also judge the condition of the wheel and tire.

Question 02: Can you convert my open headlights on my late model 1967 XKE to covered headlights?

Tom's Answer: Yes, we can convert your XKE to covered headlights. It will require changing sheet metal, painting the front of the bonnet (at the very least), fitting the chrome rims and glass, etc once the new components are installed. All the parts are available for purchase.

Question 03: : For freeway driving, how can I get the reduction in RPM’s?  Right now, my car is revving very high in 4th gear at 70 MPH?

Tom's Answer: You have two choices: you can change the gear ratio in your rear end, or you can change the transmission to a 5 speed. By doing this you will reduce the RPM’s in 4th gear (for gear ratio change) and 5th gear, if changing the tranny.

Question 04:
I have an XK-150 and I noticed that it is hard for me to steer my car when I am parking. Can I add power steering to it? Also, I have a bench seat in the car, can I install bucket seats?

Tom's Answer: Yes, they make an electric power steering that can be added. You can even adjust the sensitivity, and it’s a great product. We do not recommend you install it yourself. We recommend a professional install it for you.

Bucket seats will give you a more controlled, and confrontable ride. They can be trimmed in any color you want, more foam can be added for extra padding, or we can even make a lumbar support pillow for the passengers back.

Question 05: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...

Tom's Answer:
We use "CPI" which is published by Black Book. It is an incredible, informative price guide and reference, and we highly recommend it!

10 TIPS TO SUCCESS WHEN PREPARING FOR A RALLY

1. Cooling is a major concern in any rally car. The radiator needs to be mounted on rubber or polyurethane bushes, enabling enough movement to avoid the radiator shaking itself apart. It also needs protection against clogging caused by simple, unexpected problems such as a swarm of butterflies, as well as damage from stones and mud.

2. Electrics need careful attention. Nothing is worse than trouble-shooting electrical problems in the dark. Waterproofing and sound connections are essential to ensure that you don’t end up with a tangle of loose cables around your feet. It’s also vital to keep out dust and grime.

3. Under-body protection is vital. Wings can be lined to protect bodywork, while all items that could snag on rocky ground (such as spring-hangers) need skid-plates. The sump guard and gearbox are areas that we plan carefully.

4. Gas tanks often need attention. A long-range tank might be beneficial, but will need careful planning. It’s important to consider the weight implications, and mounting needs care, so that nothing vibrates, comes loose and causes problems. Leaks on unions are not helpful.

5. Filters are vital. No rally car will venture far without substantial fuel filters to prevent water and muck entering the engine. Efficient air filters are also a key element.

6. Axles need the optimum ratio and the right bearings. The inside of an axle is rarely inspected, and crews often say: “It was ok on the last event”. But because an axle endures considerable pounding and punishment, it’s a regular culprit in sudden failures, and a very time-consuming repair during an event.

7. The steering and suspension need careful planning, with an uncompromisingly high-quality approach focused on durability and efficiency.

8. Brakes can often be upgraded and protected. But it’s important to ensure compliance with the event regulations regarding modifications. Normally, governing bodies such as the FIA and FIVA set these.

9. Ensuring that the car is comfortable, and efficient inside, can make a vast difference for the crew. Installing the most appropriate seating, navigation equipment, interior lighting and other refinements are added comforts for the trip.

10. The engine, transmission, and driveline are the heart of the car. Review all relevant matters with the competing crew, from small things like ensuring the exhaust system is flexible (so that nothing snap off on the first rocky section) to big things such as achieving the optimum blend of performance and reliability.

Initiated to showcase the elegance of the automobile in motion, the Tour also underscores the early history of the place that is Pebble Beach. Decades before golf links were laid out along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, this area was known for its scenic drive, winding for miles through the pine and cypress forest, dancing alongside dramatic cliffs and leading, ultimately, to a beautiful crescent-shaped bay.

The traditional Tour traces portions of the original 17-Mile Drive, traverses nearby mountains and valleys, and pauses for a time in charming Carmel-by-the-Sea. Tour participants enjoy a catered gourmet lunch, a champagne celebration at the finish and commemorative gifts.

The 2017 Tour is likely to revert back to its original route.

Werks Reunion - A Porsche Gathering

Porsche Club of America (PCA) welcomes all Porsche clubs, owners, and enthusiasts to Werks Reunion Monterey on August 18th. Membership in PCA is not required to participate in this celebration of Porsche automobiles. Expect to view a breathtaking array of Porsches at this free-to-spectators event, from rare classics to current models and everything in between. Display your own cherished car in model-specific Porsche Corrals or enter the Porsche Judged Field and compete to win in more than 20 prize categories.

Werks Reunion was created by the Porsche Club of America as an event to celebrate both the Porsche marque as well as the camaraderie of being an enthusiast. This is not a contest of who has removed dust from the deepest crevices in their Porsche but rather a judged show that rewards a Porsche that has been lovingly maintained and presents itself well on the field. Our judges do not use Porsche Parade Concours score sheets but rather rank the cars according to certain attributes discussed prior to judging. For those who do not wish to have their cars judged, you may display in the model specific corrals or if the organizers see fit, on the judged field itself. There are no score sheets returned or protest committees. This is a casual gathering of Porsche enthusiasts focused on having fun rather than solely competition.
