QUESTION: Is it beneficial to install a 5 speed transmission when you are doing the restoration, or stay with the 4 speed?

• ANSWER: Today’s driving of fast speeds on the freeways are in excess of 65 mph.  In the 1960’s the average speed was much less, more like 50 mph.  With the 4 speed, your engine is now running higher RPMs because of the faster speeds.  Your objective would be to reduce the RPMs of the engine, and in turn increase the longevity of the engine's life. It also improves your gas mileage, and the short shift makes the car more fun to drive!

QUESTION: Is it true that an Etype does not have a frame?

• ANSWER:
Yes. XKEs were uniquely designed with a monocoque, which consisted of two main tubes, made up of the sills inner/outer between front and rear wheel arches. The Bulkhead was attached forward by a tubular front sub-frame..

QUESTION:
What are your recommendations for my exhaust manifolds on my E-type?

• ANSWER: This is really a personal preference, and depends on the application of your car. Porcelain manifolds are factory correct for the car, and are considered proper when campaigning. Heat treated manifolds function just as porcelain manifolds, but do not require maintenance. Headers increase performance, horsepower, and efficiency. Each manifold choice is correct, but it's up to you to choose what is best for your car, and your needs. Some enthusiasts have chosen to have 2 sets of manifolds, which provides an unique option from showing and driving their XKE.

QUESTION: I have two classic cars, a 1967 Porsche 911 Targa, and a Merceds Benz 280 SL, and I wanted to see the different colors available with the formulas. Can you tell me where I can get a current paint code?

• ANSWER: For a fairly complete listing of color combinations available, go to the color library on TCP Global’s website for more direction:

http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary

QUESTION: I was wondering how you determine the value of a classic car when you are trying to buy or sell...

• ANSWER:

Five Facts You Might Not Know About Jaguar Cars

The Jaguar has always been a very popular car among collectors and high end car owners alike. The long and storied history behind this classic automobile is only one of the reasons why. In fact, most people that admire Jaguars don’t even realize that they have such a unique past. From their early days when they were known simply as the Swallow Sidecar Company to their modern supercars, the name Jaguar has always been synonymous with beauty and class. Here are five facts that you might not know about this wonderful car:

Jaguar Was Not Originally Well Received Across The Board

The first Jaguar models, the SS90 and the SS100, were not the most popular among car enthusiasts. They certainly had their fans, but there were a number of folks that simply did not like them. They all seemed to love the way the car looked, but they considered the 6-cylinder engine to be too weak. When the company put out the SS100 with some extras to boost performance, the cars began to increase in popularity. Still, it is odd to think about a Jaguar starting out with such humble beginnings.

Jaguar Was Originally Built By A Motorcycle Sidecar Company

Way back in the beginning, Jaguar was called the Swallow Sidecar Company and they were not in the business of luxury sports cars. In fact, they were in the business of making sidecars for motorcycles of the time. It was not until 1926 that they started working on cars, and it was 1945 before they changed that God awful name to Jaguar as we know it today.

Jaguar Dominated The Lemans Racing Circuit In The 1950s

The Lemans 24 hours is a race that is very familiar to Jaguar fans, and the 1950s saw Jaguar winning virtually every time out. Five times the Jaguar lines took the checkered flag, and the other races they were right there. This racing history brings in a whole new group of fans and keeps the Jaguar name at the top of most Lemans discussions.

Jaguar Used The Logo To Symbolize Speed And Power

The Jaguar logo that shows a jaguar running is meant to show great speed and power. It is easy to understand why considering that Jaguar makes all their own engines themselves. This allows them to build the ultimate performance in engines up to 12-cylinders. That is a ton of power and it certainly matches that world famous logo.

The Ford Years Were A Bomb

Ford owned Jaguar for about nineteen years from 1989 through 2008. During those years, Jaguar never once turned a profit. This is probably because the name lost a ton of it’s uniqueness and luster. Jaguar is supposed to be recognized as special and different. The name Ford is anything but given that it is a car for the masses.

Jaguars are fantastic cars that certainly are considered to be better than the rest. To have that type of following, Jaguar has had to keep an incredible level of excellence over their long tenure in the luxury car business. With new models coming out all the time, Jaguar should be around for a long time to come.

Time spent taking apart the car, rebuilding the car and restoring the car to a brilliant piece of art, is time never returned. So when the car of your dreams is glistening in the sun and the engine is purring to a perfect pitch, keep it that way forever, by putting it into the storage barn for the cold winter months.

Take your car for an end of the season drive, feel the vibration of the motor racing to a top level roar, cruise along the roads and streets, enjoy the waves from people who appreciate the skill of workmanship put into the restoration of your classic car and remember the power of your car beneath your body for the long winter months ahead.

Find the right place, where your classic car, your muscle car, your dream vehicle will spend the cold, dark months in solitude. The special place could be your garage at home or it could be a private or commercial garage specializing in car storage. A perfect storage garage will have a climate controlled air system, not too cold, not too hot and not too humid.

Keeping the air at a controlled temperature will assure good ventilation throughout and around your car and decrease the possibility of rust and corrosion build up on any part of the car. If a climate controlled garage is not an option, keep the garage where you will store your car, clean, limit traffic in and out, keep windows and doors closed, no storage of items around your car, and COVER your car with a superior car cover.

Superior grade car covers allows the air to breath around your car and stop the dusk from landing on the car and then scratching small tiny lines into the car’s brilliant paint job.

1. Clean the Inside of the Car:

If you store your car for the winter, you need to make sure it is clean both on the inside and out. Remove all dirt, debris or food residue, so that insects or other animals will not target your car during the cold season. You may also apply some pest repellant.

2. Wash the Car

Wash the exterior of your car and have it waxed, so that the vehicle won’t be prone to rusting, and you’ll have a clean car when the spring comes.

3. Cover the Vehicle

Regardless of the storing area you use for your vehicle, you should drape your car in a waterproof cover. This will protect the paint.

4. Put the Tires on Jack Stands

When stored for over 1 month, it’s better if the tires don’t touch the ground. Get some jack stands, which will prevent the development of flat spots on the tires.

5. Disconnect the Battery

To preserve the quality of your battery, you should disconnect it. Even when in storage, the car may extract some electricity from the battery, and you’ll have a difficult time starting your car in the spring. Batteries need to be secured with a low amp 6-12 volt battery tender. This battery tender will keep the battery fully charged all winter long without ever turning the motor on to charge the battery
