AMELIA ISLAND AUCTIONS RECAP - FEBRUARY 2024
The Amelia Island, Florida classic car auctions hosted by Broad Arrow , Gooding & Co., and Bonhams in 2024 were standout events in the collector car community, showcasing an impressive array of vehicles and achieving notable sales results.
Broad Arrow Auctions also had its share of remarkable sales and engaging moments. Notable sales included a 1967 Ford GT40 Mk I road car that fetched $4,405,000, a 1988 Porsche 959 SC Reimagined by Canepa sold for $3,085,000, and a 2020 McLaren Speedtail that went for $2,067,500, highlighting the strong interest in modern hypercars as well as classic models.
Gooding & Company's auction achieved a total of $67,342,270, with an 87% sell-through rate, selling 111 of 127 lots. The auction was highlighted by several million-dollar sales, including a 1903 Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP 'Roi des Belges' that sold for $12,105,000, setting a new record for pre-1930 vehicles.
Bonhams auction at Amelia Island, Florida, was characterized by
a diverse array of offerings, from pre-war classics to modern exotics.
Notably smaller in scale compared to past years, it nonetheless featured
significant sales, including a reconstructed 1904 Gordon Bennett Napier
racing car for $742,000. The auction maintained its tradition of
presenting a wide range of vehicle eras and types, underscoring the
unique appeal of Bonhams' Amelia Island event.
The auctions attracted a wide range of collectors and enthusiasts, driven by the diversity of the cars offered, from historic pre-war models to modern supercars. The results from both auctions underline the robust health of the classic car market, with bidders showing strong enthusiasm for well-preserved, rare, and historically significant vehicles.
AMELIA ISLAND AUCTION 2024 RECAP
The Broad Arrow Auction at The Amelia significantly outperformed its forecasts, achieving over $63M in total sales with a remarkable sell-through rate of 92%. As the event's official auction house for the second year, Broad Arrow hosted a two-day event that attracted a full house, with over 1,000 bidders and guests in attendance. The atmosphere was charged with excitement throughout, leading to a dramatic increase in sales figures, nearly doubling from the previous year's $31M.
Key sales included a 1967 Ford GT40, fetching $4,405,000, and a 2022 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, which went for $4,047,500. Noteworthy sales from the Racer X Collection, which featured 12 cars all sold on Friday evening, included a 1966 Shelby 427 S/C Cobra sold after the auction concluded. The following day, the Gregorie Neck Collection also saw impressive outcomes, with a 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet by Norrmalm leading at $1,435,000. Additionally, a post-auction sale featured the 1959 Porsche 718 RSK Spyder “Lucybelle III,” which quickly found a new owner after the event.
One of our previous restorations - this 1964 Jaguar E-Type FHC was featured at Broad Arrow's Amelia Island auction with a selling price of $159,600. This special E-Type features an upgraded 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission, knock-off Dunlop wheels, enclosed Aston Martin headlamps, and Wilwood disc brakes.

AMELIA ISLAND AUCTION 2024 RECAP
The 2024 Gooding & Company auction at Amelia Island, Florida, was a
notable event in the classic car auction calendar, drawing attention
with some spectacular sales and setting new records. The auction
achieved a total of $67,342,270 with an 87% sell-through rate, selling
111 of 127 lots. The average price per lot sold was approximately
$606,687, and 14 cars sold for over a million dollars each.
Among the highlights were a 1903 Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP 'Roi des Belges' selling for a remarkable $12,105,000, setting a new record for pre-1930 vehicles and becoming the most expensive car produced before 1930 to be sold at auction. This vehicle has a rich history, including setting a speed record and participating in early 20th-century races.
Other notable sales included a 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series I Spider, a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider, and a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach, each fetching several million dollars. The Daytona Spider, in particular, sold for $3,635,000, setting a new record for the model.
The auction also featured a variety of cars that exceeded expectations, such as a 1962 Volvo P1800 sold for $95,200, showcasing the market's appreciation for rare and well-preserved examples of less traditionally prestigious makes.In addition to the cars, the auction atmosphere and the spirited bidding underscored the continued enthusiasm for classic and collector cars, with modern hypercars like a 2020 McLaren Speedtail also drawing significant attention and fetching $2,067,500.

Despite being a smaller event in terms of the number of cars and overall results compared to previous years, the auction featured some notable sales. One of the highlights was the sale of a reconstructed 1904 Gordon Bennett Napier racing car, which, built around the original 15-liter engine, fetched $742,000. This vehicle is notable for being one of the first cars to achieve 100 mph and for setting a speed record at Daytona Beach in 1905.
Other significant sales included a 2007 Honda NSX-R GT by Spoon, which sold for $368,000, exceeding its estimated value. This vehicle was notable for its original as-raced condition and its significance in Japanese motorsport history. A 1961 Morgan Plus 4 Super Sports, known for its performance and homologation history, sold for $100,800, aligning with its estimate. This model is a classic example of Morgan's racing heritage and was well received by collectors. Additionally, a 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, after a recent restoration that brought it to better-than-new condition, went for $72,800, below its estimated range but still highlighting the strong interest in high-quality restorations of classic SUVs.Other vehicles of note included a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 250GD "Wolf" that sold for $89,600, a 1966 Porsche 911 2.0 Coupe fetching $98,560, and a 1997 Porsche 911 Type 993 Carrera Cabriolet that brought in $71,680. A 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 Sedan also caught attention with a sale price of $103,600, well above its market benchmark value. Overall, the 2024 Bonhams auction at Amelia Island showcased a varied collection, from historically significant race cars to beautifully restored classics and modern high-performance vehicles, demonstrating the broad interest and vibrant market for collector cars.
