BONHAM'S AUCTIONS - JANUARY 24, 2024
The Bonhams Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, held on January 25, 2024,
concluded with a total sales figure of just over $12 million from 68
cars. This event marked the first automotive auction of the year for
Bonhams at their customary location, the Westin Kierland Resort &
Spa. Notably, more than 40% of the total sales revenue was contributed
by a single car. Despite the reduced number of lots offered compared to
previous years, the auction featured a variety of interesting and
unusual vehicles, including selections from the Maine Classic Car Museum
and the late author Clive Cussler's collection of prewar cars. The
oldest car sold during Arizona Auction Week, a 1907 Mitchell Model E
Runabout, went for $33,600. The highest-selling vehicle was a 2022
Bugatti Chiron Super Sport, fetching $5.175 million, maintaining
Bonhams' record for selling Scottsdale's most expensive car for the
second consecutive year.
The auction still featured significant sales, including a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Sunroof Coupe that sold for $1,380,000. However, several cars with estimates exceeding a million dollars did not sell, such as a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan and a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. The auction highlighted the continued appeal and value of classic cars, with notable sales also including a 1970 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Spider at $596,250 and a 1966 Aston Martin DB6 Sports Saloon at $268,800. These results showcase both the enduring interest in classic and historical vehicles and the specific tastes of collectors attending the Scottsdale auction.
