SCOTTSDALE MARCH '21 SALES

Coverage from Mecum and Barrett-Jackson Auctions.

Mecum Auctions held its 3rd annual collector car auction in Glendale, Arizona at State Farm Stadium on March 18-20, 2021. The sale took place just before Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale 2021 auction, which had been postponed from its usual mid-January date. The Gendale auction reached an impressive $42.3 million in sales — which was an increase of over 14% over the total in 2020. Mecum sold 712 of 829 vehicles on offer for a sale-through rate of 86%. The format consisted of a live auction with onsite bidding, in addition to online and telephone bidding.

Barrett-Jackson
Scottsdale March '21 Sale

The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction is a unique event. The 2021 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction was rescheduled from the usual mid-January to the week of March 22, 2021 at Westworld of Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2021, Barrett-Jackson sold in total, 1,054 vehicles for over $95 million, while over 1,000 pieces of automobilia brought in over $4.4 million, and $5.8 million was raised through the sale of charity vehicles, bringing the total auction sales to more than $105 million with a 100-percent sell-through rate and over 95 world-record auction sales achieved.

Top Results at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale March 2021 Sale :

01. 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake $5,500,000

02. 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 VIN001 $2,500,000

03. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 $2,475,000

04. 2018 Ford GT ’67 Heritage Edition $1,210,000

05. 2021 Ford Bronco 2-Door VIN001 $1,075,000

06. 2017 Ford GT $990,000

07. 1965 Shelby GT350 $962,500

08. 1959 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible $825,000

The top seller at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2021 collector car auction was as expected for the only remaining 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake, CSX 3015, (Lot #1396). However, the result of $5,500,000 was probably slightly disappointing. It was exactly the same as what the car sold for at Scottsdale 2007, but more than the $5,115,000 paid for the Shelby in a post-hammer deal at the 2015 Scottsdale auction.

The 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake CSX 3015 is one of only 23 total 427 competition roadsters built. A year later it was transformed for racing legend Carroll Shelby into the Super Snake and reclassified as 427 Cobra Semi-Competition (S.C.). Shelby American added twin Paxton superchargers to the 427ci V8 and mated it to a 3-speed automatic transmission that could handle the massive power.
