The restoration of this 1959 MGA 1500 Roadster began with a
clear objective. It had been a reliable companion for its caretaker, but its 1500
engine was tired and no longer suited his expectations for performance or
enjoyment. With this in mind, he commissioned our team to begin a comprehensive
restoration and upgrade program that balances authenticity with improved
drivability.
From the outset, the collector expressed that this MGA is
his dream car and one he intends to keep for the long term. It already featured
a five-speed transmission, but he sought a more spirited experience behind the
wheel. After reviewing options, we presented an 1800 cc MGB five main bearing
engine that we had previously built but never installed. It offered the ideal
blend of period character and stronger performance. He soon approved the
upgrade, and the project moved forward into a new and exciting direction.
We recommended adding a period style supercharger system
that included carburetors, alternator, and related components. This would
provide not only increased power, but also a more engaging and enjoyable
driving experience. The owner agreed, and the mechanical team began fitting,
fabricating, and testing the new systems as the transformation of the MGA
began.
Mechanical and Performance Enhancements
To support the engine and supercharger combination, several
key upgrades are now being incorporated. The standard radiator is being
replaced with a high efficiency aluminum radiator paired with an auxiliary
cooling fan. A 123 electronic ignition system is being installed for improved
dependability, and a new stainless steel exhaust system is being fitted to give
the car a sharper tone and greater durability.
Additional power requires confident braking, so the MGA is
receiving upgraded front disc brakes. The owner prefers the traditional
appearance of steel wheels rather than wire wheels, so our team is restoring
his original set to a bright, fresh finish.
A new wiring harness is being installed to provide a clean
and reliable electrical foundation for the upgraded mechanical components and
for the long term enjoyment of the car.
Interior Craftsmanship and Owner Inspired Details
Inside, the MGA is receiving a custom tailored interior
created by our master trimmer. The owner requested seats crafted entirely in
leather both front and back, rather than the vinyl originally used by the
factory. This gives the cockpit a richer feel and a more upscale level of
finish.
Although the MGA arrived in a red exterior with black
interior, research confirmed that its original color combination was reversed.
The owner chose to return the car to its correct factory appearance. For a
personal touch, he asked that the dashboard be refinished in red, giving the
interior a distinctive look that remains in harmony with the car’s original
design.
Bodywork, Brightwork, and System Restoration
The MGA is undergoing a full cosmetic restoration, with
careful evaluation of the body, preparation of all panels, and finishing work
that will bring the car to a high show and driving standard. All brightwork is
being restored or replaced as needed so the completed car will present with a
clean, consistent, and well balanced aesthetic.
Restoration of all major systems including hydraulics,
suspension, steering, electrical, and fuel delivery is in progress. Each system
is being rebuilt and tested to ensure that the finished car will be both
reliable and enjoyable to drive.
A Collector with a Long Term Vision
The owner of this MGA is a long time enthusiast of British
sports cars and has already expressed his intention to bring his Austin Healey
3000 to us for restoration in 2026. His appreciation for classic British
motoring adds a meaningful dimension to the work now underway.
The Project Continues
This restoration marks the beginning of a thoughtful and
personalized vision coming to life. It blends the charm of the MGA with
performance upgrades and craftsmanship that elevate the car beyond its original
capabilities. As the project moves forward, we will continue to document the
progress and share updates. Each phase brings this 1959 MGA one step closer to
delivering the driving experience its owner has always imagined. Stay tuned to
our Spring 2026 newsletter for an exciting update on this MG build!
