1969 Jaguar E-Type 2+2

A Classic Showcase restoration.

About the Jaguar

We recently had the pleasure of restoring a 1969 Jaguar Series 2 XKE 2+2, a well-known model from Jaguar’s iconic E-Type series. Originally a project car with low original miles, the XKE caught the attention of a collector during its restoration. He wound up purchasing the car as we were nearing completion, allowing us to work closely with him to complete the restoration to show-quality standards, with attention to both originality and personal preferences.

ABOUT THE XKE's RESTORATION

The Jaguar XKE 2+2, known for its extended wheelbase and additional seating, combines the driving pleasure of the E-Type with added practicality. Our goal was to restore this classic while preserving its authentic features and performance. We fully rebuilt the 4.2-liter inline-six engine to factory specifications, ensuring it would deliver the power and smoothness for which the E-Type is famous. The automatic transmission, a standard feature in many 2+2 models, was restored to provide a reliable, seamless driving experience.

In terms of bodywork, we focused on maintaining the original lines and proportions that make the XKE instantly recognizable. The Silver exterior was refinished to a high standard, with attention to every detail, from the smooth body panels to the restored chrome trim. The interior was also carefully brought back to its original condition, with new upholstery, and rebuilt instrumentation to complete the look and feel of the era.

After the restoration was finished and the car was delivered to its new owner, the 2+2 made its debut at the 2024 San Diego Jaguar Club Concours d'Elegance. The XKE earned its first trophy at its first public appearance - a proud moment for both the owner and our team! Competing against some of the finest Jaguars, the 2+2 impressed judges with its attention to detail and quality restoration.

This project allowed us to bring a classic Jaguar back to life, and the recognition it received at the Concours was the perfect way to celebrate the completion of the restoration. The 1969 Jaguar Series 2 XKE 2+2 is now ready to continue its journey as a beloved piece of automotive history, and we’re excited to see it thrive in the show circuit for years to come!

Jaguar XKE Series 2 History

The E-Type was initially designed and shown to the public as a grand tourer in two-seater coupé form (FHC or Fixed Head Coupé) and as convertible (OTS or Open Two Seater). The 2+2 version with a lengthened wheelbase was released several years later. The Series 2 introduced a number of design changes, largely due to U.S. National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration mandates. The most distinctive exterior feature is the absence of the glass headlight covers, which affected several other imported cars, like the Citroën DS, as well. Unlike other cars, this step was applied worldwide for the E-Type. Other hallmarks of Series 2 cars are a wrap-around rear bumper, larger front indicators and tail lights re-positioned below the bumpers, and an enlarged grille and twin electric fans to aid cooling. Additional U.S.-inspired changes included a steering lock which moved the ignition switch to the steering column, replacing the dashboard mounted ignition and push button starter, the symmetrical array of metal toggle switches replaced with plastic rockers, and a collapsible steering column to absorb impact in the event of an accident. New seats allowed the fitment of head restraints, as required by U.S. law beginning in 1969. The engine is easily identified visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a more industrial "ribbed" appearance. It was de-tuned in the US with twin two-barrel Strombergs replacing three SUs. Combined with larger valve clearances horsepower was reduced from 265 to 246 and torque from 283 to 263. Air conditioning and power steering were available as factory options.
