1963 Austin-Healey 3000 MKII Client Restoration

Following the successful restoration of his 1959 MG A, this long-time British car enthusiast has once again entrusted our team with another project...this time, a 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk II. Having been impressed with both the process and the result of his MGA, he was eager to begin the next phase of his collection, selecting the Healey as a car he intends to drive regularly and enjoy at events. Like the MGA before it, this project is being approached with a focus on preserving the character of the original car while enhancing its drivability and long-term reliability.

Mechanical and Performance Upgrades

At the heart of the restoration is a comprehensive mechanical rebuild, including the engine, suspension, rear end, and steering system. The goal is to deliver a car that performs with confidence and consistency, whether on local roads or longer touring drives. One of the most notable upgrades is the addition of a brand-new 5-speed transmission, replacing the original 4-speed unit. The factory gearbox, while period-correct, is not fully synchronized and can feel dated in modern driving conditions. The new 5-speed provides fully synchronized gears and a shorter, more precise shift pattern, greatly improving the overall driving experience.

Supporting upgrades include the installation of an aluminum radiator for improved cooling efficiency, along with a new wiring harness to ensure long-term electrical reliability. Each system is being carefully rebuilt and tested as part of a cohesive approach to performance and dependability.

Interior, Finish, and Original Specs

The Healey is being refinished in its original color combination of Healey Blue, complemented by a blue interior, top, and boot. This return to factory specification maintains the car’s classic visual identity while elevating the overall presentation to a high show-driver standard. Inside, the car is receiving upgraded Wilton wool carpeting, offering a more refined and durable finish compared to the original materials. Throughout the restoration, attention is being given to both authenticity and subtle enhancements that improve comfort and usability without compromising the spirit of the car.

Bodywork, Brightwork, and System Restoration

As with all of our restorations, the body and trim are being addressed with equal care. All brightwork is being restored or replaced as needed to achieve a clean and consistent finish. The car’s major systems—including braking, suspension, steering, and electrical—are being rebuilt to ensure the completed Healey is as enjoyable to drive as it is to present.

A Driver’s Car with a Purpose

This Austin-Healey is being built with the intention of being driven and enjoyed. The owner plans to take the car to events and become involved with local Austin-Healey and MG clubs, continuing his enthusiasm for classic British motoring. As the restoration progresses, this Healey will join the MGA as part of a thoughtfully developed collection, reflecting both the owner’s vision and the craftsmanship of the Classic Showcase team. Stay tuned to our Summer 2026 issue for an exciting update on the progress of this restoration!
