Description
(SOLD) This 1964 Jaguar XKE Series 1 Roadster is an original California numbers-matching car that retains its original color combination, as well as black California license plates. The car came from a Jaguar collector in Southern California who enjoyed the car and maintained it on a regular basis. It also features the “J64” tag next to the data plate, which was assigned to the car from the California DMV – a unique original feature that is exclusive to original registered cars in the 1960s in California.
This E-Type is a great candidate for the person that wants a good bones car that is numbers-matching and solid Series 1 to restore. It is also a great choice to simply to drive and upgrade to the level that you wish as you enjoy the car.
The paint does have check marks and would benefit from a repaint - but it is presentable in its current form. The upholstery is good and serviceable, and the convertible top and boot cover are also in good condition. The headliner of the top would benefit from reupholster.
Regarding the mechanicals: there are a few extra toggle switches in the car for operating the fan and other items, and the XKE is also equipped with an after-market fuel pump that is functioning well. If the car will be driven on a regular basis, we would highly recommend changing the tires. It also features several modifications that could be easily be removed. The E-Type has good power, and runs, drives, and brakes properly, with all vital signs showing to be very good.
These E-Type examples are becoming increasingly harder to find, so if you have been contemplating a restoration to a great core car, now is time for the person wants to buy the “best of the series” at a really great price.
History
Launched in 1961 at the international motor show in Geneva, the XKE echoed the sensation of the XK-120, perhaps even more. An astonishing performance package, with amazing speed and handling, the XKE’s’ brand-new 4-wheel independent suspension system was so well conceived, it was used by Jaguar for over thirty years. The Series 1 4.2 is a very user friendly, sporty driver, and one of the most collectable of the E-Types. These are wonderful cars with a 4.2-liter engine with 3 SU carburetors and a fully synchronized transmission. Some of the features of this model are covered headlights, toggle switches, full instrumentation with styling and a design that was way ahead of its time with center console, and arm rests. Other features of this Series 1 are its steep windshield and tail lights, which are placed above the bumper line in the rear deck. Similarly, the parking lights are above the front bumper line in the front fenders. In 1964 when the 4.2 was tested, fuel consumption was rated road reported at 22 MPG and a top speed of 140 MPH.
